You can't really say which weapon is better than whatever other weapon, it comes down to how the weapon is used and the situation.

PPCs. No ammo, weigh less and look cooler!

Hon. Mechwarriors;

Twinned AC2s will probably win out as you can afford the 4/6/4 movement profile with maxed out armour and enough ammo to get the job done. This "Brittish Frigate with needle guns" strategy is not the typical experience of most mechwarriros, but given an open map and an unlimited number of turns to prosecute the battle, it will be no contest at all. In table top games, I usually use quads and take advantage of hills and water for partial cover. 50% of the hits will ground out and most of your kill tracks will be 11 or 12 at best.

Respectfully

Samaritan

Dual PPCs, cause I feel like Zeus with thunderbolts in my hands \o/.

But it would be interesting to compare the tonnage needed for additional heat sinks regarding the PPCs and the tonnage of ammo you add instead of that. I think I'll do the math tomorrow just for my benefit ;)

You didn't state which caliber and type the AC's are....all i know is that i wouldn't use a pair of Gauss rifles or a pair of ER PPC's.
Dual Gauss rifles are to heavy and dual ER PPC's runs to hot.
An ER PPC and either an AC/2 or Gauss rifle is a completly different matter however.

Question though. How many chassis can actually rock two Gauss Rifles? I think the Fafnir had dual heavy gauss rifles, but I don't remember much else.

The one I want, Devastator rocks dual Gauss, dual PPC, and four medium lasers. :D

Let's just say AC is best, as in Awesome Canon!
Seriously A bigger mech with some LBX or Ultra 2s or even 5s will bring down most light to heavy mechs fast enough to run for cover and ammo replenishment;)

I was looking at it from a longevity standpoint. PPC's don't run out of ammo and so long as you manage your heat wisely, you can stay in the fight indefinitely. I might not put down as much damage in the same amount of time but I will put out more damage over a longer period.

Them iHGauss, sadly not available(In the game obviously), so I'll have to settle for a pair of UAC-5.

You didn't include any other weapons. :(

Everyone knows anything that can do 15 damage to one location in one shot has a nice chance of decapitating a mech. Therefore the Gauss Rifle wins. But if you're talking ER PPC instead of just PPC, the ER versions can also do 15 damage. And the autocannons come in a variety of sizes from AC/2 to AC/20, so an AC/20 does 20 damage (unless of course loaded with LB-X ammo, which would spread the damage around). But an Ultra version of the autocannon can rapid fire (twice the shots) and hence do even more damage, but may not hit with both shots.

Personally, I'd rather go with lots of mini-hits to increase crit chances. LRMs, SRMs, LB-X ammo, etc. Or just load the mech up with a ton of Medium or ER Medium Lasers and go to down with damage and heat.

PPCs are your best bet, but after that if you plan on recycling some of your longer range weapons back into close range, I'd go for an ac 10 rather then a gauss rifle.

Assuming you can take a head off with a Gauss like you can in tabletop (given heads had 12 points and Gauss does 15 dmg)

Gauss

Depends on the Mech. The pilot and what caliber of Auto Cannon.

Dual UAC-20's for sure, flank the gaus and missile jumpers while in passive and just wreck em, it is by far my favorite move in MWLL. Sure i almost always end up dead but its worth it to take two or three of em down. (sometimes ends very very badly though)

How about an HAG? :D

Right now, I think I'd take a PPC and a Gauss, gives decent midrange performance, I can pack some ammo for the Gauss, and need less heatsinks as well as a single PPC won't reach the limit that fast and there's bound to be some breaks.
Final polish with some missiles.

It's a pretty tough call. Esp. since the big AC hitters have a very different purpose from the Gauss and PPCs (range). But if you are making range equal(ish) and implying AC/2s or /5s I'd go PPC easy. But even if the range is equaled AC/2s and Gauss Rifles still have different functions in battle.
