It would be cool to see various period servers though. Separate instances of the game universe set in the Star League, 4th Succession War, even Dark Ages.

Assuming it's possible but very rare: If I ever score a Timberwolf salvage, first thing I'm doing is grabbing FRAPS and recording me selling it to post on these forums.
Ergo, 3049 is perfect.

This time setting would have allowed for any amount of world swapping since much of the era was never fully defined or detailed. The advance of 1 game year per three days (real-time) would have had a 3050 expansion showing up in 1-2 years. After that, time passage could have been slowed down to 1 game year per 30 days real time.
Additionally, IS vs Clan issues would have been something to worry about later. But, as always, I am willing to see what PGI will come up with.

While I may have certain issues with the way the Clans were/are portrayed, allow me to say that I don't have any hate toward people that like them.

In my eyes, the 3049 seems like a very odd time because it means more or less the next big content patch has got to be the Clan Invasion, and the addition of Clan mechs represents such a huge shift in the power curve that there really isn't that much to go from there.
Basically, if they started much younger, you have a while to play. But right now, I'm probably not going to buy anything in-game because I know the Clan stuff is going to come out eventually and I'll be more likely to invest money there.
Plus, Tech Level 1 owned because it was so hilariously archaeic.
3025 might have been a bit far back, But Say start the Game off on the Day of Hanse and Mellisas Wedding.. That would have been a fun time..
I mean any war that basicly starts with these words is a Win...
"Hanse Davion married Melissa Steiner. The leader of every Successor State was there, including their aides, heirs, and other VIPs. At the wedding reception, Hanse Davion uttered one of the most quoted lines in Inner Sphere history, "My dear... I give you the Capellan Confederation."

Sometimes, starting at the beginning is not the most expedient way to reboot a franchise. 3025 is considered level 1 because it is very simple, too simple for most of the community that will be playing this from the start. 3049 offers a certain amount of simplicity for people new to BT, but not so simple as to bore the majority of the older players.
Having the Clan invasion right around the corner also gives Clan-centric players a reason to play right away, knowing that it won't be long before they get their test tube made hands on their favorite crutch mech.
You say simple and boring, I say balanced and more challenging.
Level 2 rules don't add that much flexibility or tactical depth to the game. All they really add is some new flavours of damage dealing. In exchange for this they break a fundamental game mechanic, heat dissipation.
I don't mind level 2 games, and I will play them but I firmly believe that BT works best with the original level 1 rules and load outs.

Not quite the same gameplay as MWO is going to be.. but still looks fun.

That said, I think 3028 would have been a perfect time to start the game. The Fourth Succession war would mean that a lot of the potential game-breaking stratagems wouldn't be viable, and there would be no Clans to cause a massive schism in the player base. And it would be a perfect time for a dynamic and interesting player driven meta campaign.

I really don't want to see Clans as PC Factions personally but I know I'll get flamed for that.

Ha!
I was going to say something about if they'd done a sped up timeline like one year in Btech history for every 3 months real time, but even then it would take 4 years real time to get to the was of 3039 from 3025. If it started in 3034 though you could have the war of 3039 come up at the beginning of the second year, but then it would still be at the end of the year, nearly 3 more years after that event before we saw the clans. Some games like WoW and EVE have player bases that have stuck around for so long, but many games don't. I for one would hope to see a new MW:O before we get to Dark Ages. An MW:O2 if you will (MW:O IIC?) that might take place during another timeframe such as the 4th Succession War but with mixed units to make up for the lack of mech types, or the Fall of the Star League.
