Yes and no. It does tie into the Marvel cinematic universe. For example, events in Captain America 2 directly influenced events in, and are continuing to shape, the series overall. Supposedly, the series will provide background material and plot foundation for The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.
The series revolves around Phil Coulson (Spoiler) who didn't die as he actually appeared to at Loki's hands in The Avengers. He assembles a team and goes jetting around the globe investigating the random and strange and battling an organization that is trying to use Extremis to create supersoldiers.
*Spoiler*
The second half of the season ties into Cap'n A 2 and involves Coulson's team as the strive to hold the tattered remnants of Shield together and combat Hydra. It's pretty entertaining, even if it is not a "great" series in its own. I like it and am enjoying it considerably (due in part overall to its, more family-friendly atmosphere in comparison to a lot of junk on TV these days) and can't wait for each new episode!
I will warn you though - it's start is a bit rocky. The series doesn't hit its stride until about half-way through. That's when it begins to take on some form of continuity and to begin introducing more "gifted" (i.e. - supers) characters and to develop its own mystery and suspense.
For a fun popcorn-muncher, it's kind of hard to beat. Just don't expect a sweeping, impressive, or masterful story-telling experience though.

WOW!!! COOL MWO PICS!!!
I hope the eventually stick infantry and armor in it for CPU bogies. It'd be neat to drop in a large map with a company of mechs and infantry and armor support! (notice emphasis on large)
