Like the title says how can I get a drop with my son who just started playing?

Add him to your friends list and form a group?

Once you are both ingame, you can invite him on your friend list (the social overlay is that little button on the bottom right with the 3 heads) and then create a group for the two of you. Normal random groups can be up to 4 players (a full lance). On your friends list, you have two buttons: Create Group and Add Friend. If you haven't yet, send your son a friend invite and once he has accepted it, you can invite him into a group. The group option you want is 2-4 players which will drop you into random games. The larger options are for coordinated teams and need to have the full number of players to drop.

Step by Step:

1.) Login to M:WO.
2.) Find the Social Tab (it is not labeled as such, save for a a couple of people shaped icons), click.
3.) Find the Add/Invite button on the friends list that pops up, click.
4.) Type in your son's handle to the letter (no search, you must know the pilot's call-sign), click.
5.) Your son should also be logged in to MW:O.
6.) His Social Tab button should now be blinking (hard to catch if you are not paying attention), click.
7.) Friend and Group invites show up at the top of the list in purple, click on invite.
8.) Accept/Reject options appear to the left of the friends list, click accept.
9.) Now that you are friends, one of you will need to start a group; in Social Tab find Create Group, click.
10.) When the group is active, a new chat-like window will appear on the left side of the screen.
11.) Go back to the right side where the friends list is located and find your son's name, click.
12.) Invite options appear to the left of the list, as before; find Invite to Group, click.
13.) Your son, again, will have to watch his list for the purple invite; click on invite.
14.) Accept/Reject options appear again to the left of the list, click accept.
15.) Now that you should both be in the same group, you must both ready up before the leader can launch.
16.) You cannot Ready if you were in the mechlab/skills tree prior to entering the Social Tab.
17.) If you were in an unlaunchable area, close the Social Tab (using the 'X' above the friends list)
18.) Find the Home tab at the top of the screen, click.
19.) Go back to the Social Tab and try the ready button again in your group chat area.
20.) Once all players are ready (as indicated by the word "ready" next to their names) the leader can click Launch.

Simple!

I recently (about a week ago) started dropping with my 12 year old son. Nothing says family bonding time like spewing hot metal until something explodes.

Make sure you add something like TS3 to the mix. Better communication, better scores, better bonding.

Until he beats your match score, of course.

We play in the same room. I recently built my wife (*cough*) a computer that uses our big screen tv as a monitor. My son can sit in the comfort of the recliner with a wireless keyboard and mouse, while I'm close by on my computer. I did tell him that once he consistently gets above 100 damage, I'll load teamspeak on the computer so we can drop as part of a 4-man.

Good clean (ok maybe really messy) family fun. My 5 yr old paints all my mechs before battles. :-D

My 18yo plays with me on occasion, and yeah, we just sit in the same room, or if he's not here, use his WOW Vent channel. He's been better at gaming than me for years now, so it's actually an upgrade for me, when we play together.

This is Awesome, My Son (Now 42) introduced me to "battletech" on AOHell back in 1996. He is now too old to play, Im 69 and still love the game.

I drop with my son a few hours each day. It's a blast. We also drop in Comstar with folks who will respect "g" rated chat. We don't hog a channel but I mention to folks and ask if they can manage it :)

Now I wish players in text chat would clean up their language. There are plenty of ways to express frustration without profanity.
