I am looking to buy a new mech (heavy or assault). I was going to save up for the Awesome 9M with 3 ER PPC, but then I tried out the trial Victor Assualt Mech that has 2 AC/5. I really have been liking it, and have decided that maybe I want a ballistic mech so I can get autocannons. What mech should I get? I was looking at the Jagermechs and the Cataphtacts, as well as the Atlas DDC and D versions. I would like to have plenty of ammo and mount 2 or 3 autocannons if possible, maybe a AC/20 and 1 or 2 AC/5s or 2s for long range. I am leaning towards the Jagermech since it seems to have good armour (when upgraded) and enough tonnage to carry a good armarment. Both the Cataphtacts and the Jagermechs are cheaper than the Atlas. What mech and variant would be a good buy for me? Or should I just get the Awesome 9M?

Cataphracts have low lying arms.

Jagers have higher up arms.

I prefer Jagermechs over Cataphracts (most people say otherwise).

This is a money making machine when you do it right.

I would not recommend the Awesome until you get more experienced at he game and know what you're getting into.

Have a look at mechspecs http://www.mechspecs.com/forum/ for build ideas; check the sections for the Jagers, Cataphracts, etc to look for a build that sounds fun and brings the dakka.

If you want something that can take a beating, mount an AC20 and 2 AC/5's you'll want to look at getting the Ilya Muromets (Hero Cataphract).

Jagers actually have LESS armor than Cataphracts, due to tonnage, and nearly all the good ballistic builds use an XL engine, making them even more vulnerable.

Don't get me wrong, I ADORE my Jagermechs...favorite chassis...but I think you'll want to look at Cataphracts.

Or ANY of the below.

------------------------
Good 2+, 3+, 4+ and 6+ Ballistic-Centric Mech Heavy Chassis:

All the Jagers
All the Cataphracts

Good 3+ Ballistic-Centric Assault Mechs

Banshee 3E
Battlemaster 1D
Victor 9B

Good 2+ Ballistic-Centric Assault Mechs
Atlas DDC
Atlas D
Battlemaster 1G
Victor Dragonslayer
Victor 9S
Highlander Heavy Metal

Good Assault Mechs that can load an AC20
Stalker Misery
Atlas DDC
Atlas D
Atlas K
Atlas RS
Atlas Boar's Head
Banshee La Malinche
Banshee 3S
Banshee 3E
Highlander 733C
Victor 9S

You have options, enjoy.

If you're a newish player and you want ballistics you can't beat the Cataphracts, they're tough, they have a variant with JJ, one with missles, all with at least 1 ballistic hard point and there are a lot of viable loadouts that can be effective with standard engines. To me this is one of the most new player friendly chassis but is also effective at all levels of play.

I like all variants but 4X and Ilya get the most ballistics slots, 1X is a good mech if you want to run an AC-20 and lasers, of course you could do that with the 3D and have jump jets, 2X will get you missles, it's not a great LRM platform but you can run a couple of LRM 10 or 15s if you want variety.

Do you like shooting up or down hills? Get a Jagermech.
Do you like shooting over rocks, then backing up so you don't get your face shot off? Get a Jagermech.
Do you like being able to duke it out and brawl? Get a Cataphract.
Do you like arms that can swivel left-to-right? Get a Cataphract.

Bear in mind that the nickname for the Cataphract is the "Glassaphract". They are giant targets and their torso weapon is easy to shoot - lose the torso, lose the arm too. Jagermechs are much more forgiving in that department, but don't carry as much armament.

Lately I've heard some interesting things about the Banshee.

"Glassaphract" with very low armor. This thing is made of paper and carrying 3 time bombs (Gauss Rifles). Does pretty well.

Armored Cataphracts..
Spoiler

Because Cataphracts.

Awesome=be amazing in other mechs to be average in an awesome, it's a one way victim trip if you're not bloody good.

As for good ballistic mechs, pick one you like with ballistic slots and assuming you can aim and compensate for projectile travel you win...it's the op weapon of choice.

Those are the ones you'll want if you want to go ballistic. Cataphract for the city/frontline, Jagermech for hillfighting/support.

By the way, there is this cool topic that might be usefull for buying mechs in the future : Which Mech you should buy

No offense, but that's a terrible build. you have all of your ammo in the side torsos, and using two case with an XL engine. Case is useless when using an XL engine, so drop both of them for 2 spare tons. Move all the ammo into the feet and center torso. and then upgrade the XL engine to a 280.

I would suggest actually getting that 5 win free thunderbolt and seeing how it works. This might give you a better understanding of the game and whether you want a fully ballistic mech. Also, remember smurfy, which has been linked multiple times, is a good place to create builds, and also you need 3 variants to master a chassis, assuming OP doesn't know either of those two. I also don't suggest Awesome just yet unless you really know what to do, as the size of the Awesome is extraordinarily large, though it can be played well with experience. Hope I helped. :(

1 spare ton.
Game needs repair and rearm; then those CASEs wouldn't be so useless with XL engines. :(

The Banshee 3E is ballistic heaven. It can take a pounding, too. Highly recommended.

And yeah, stay away from the Awesome! There's a reason you don't see too many of them dropping into matches. :(
My first mech was an Awesome. It gave me the sense that MWO was impossible, and that I was a terrible pilot. Almost single-handedly ended my MWO career.

A mech with one ballistic hardpoint is hardly a ballistic platform. You need moar dakka.

It's a toss-up between both the dakkaphracts and the jagers for a new mechwarrior IMHO.
As ballistic platforms - both have their faults , and both have their advantages.

On certain maps the jager has the advantage , others - the 'phracts have it.
Gaming style and terrain are limiters , more so than pilot experience.
Which mech he chooses must be compatible with his own style of play....
