MWO desperately needs to incorporate the use of proceduralized mapping. The value of this investment can not be underestimated.
1. Long term player refresh. Those who have been playing a long time are most definitely getting tired of the same handful of maps, with proceduralized mapping the odds of having the same map twice are extremely slim. Strategies to best utilize terrain will have to be made on the fly.
2. With Community Warfare just around the corner (crosses fingers), proceduralized mapping would add a bit of realism to the game. I mean, what are the odds of a galaxy spanning conflict taking place in the same couple harbors, frozen cities, etc. It only makes sense.
3. Scaling issues resolved. Items/Vehicles/Plants would be given a small range of sizes that fit with the lore, not with the artists view on what it should look like on a map.
There are a number of other very cool things that could be done with that would draw players further into the game. The ability to predetermine your setting prior to launch (by popular vote or group leaders)
1. Geography (City, Valleys, Mountains, Hills, Rivers, Swamps, Ocean bottom)
2. Temperature setting ranges (What military or mercenary group would go to a Volcano with their hottest mech, when they have access to ballistics sitting in their garage?)
3. Other environmental hazards
Yes, it would take some work to develop the resources and it would have to be done right, but it would only have to be done once and then your mapping issue would take care of itself. Of course if you want one particular map for a certain royal house, or high profile mercenary hq, those could still be done but it wouldn't at all be necessary.

Unsure how to edit subject. A clearer title would be auto-generated mapping needed. There are many high quality apps for this. One example would be Terragen.

While it is an interesting idea you would likely see a sharp decline in map quality. Visually and balance wise.
