Thinking of the following:

New Game Mode which is by default not selected: Duels

Concept: One-on-one Mech Duels. Players selecting this game mode will be randomly match-made against other players selecting this game mode. Standard MM rules apply.

Players will be dropped into teams of one player each. Game mode is essentially TDM with one player on each side, with the same time limit. (If the twosome can't meet somewhere on a small map in 15 minutes to resolve their differences...)

Maps will be those of smaller sizes, therefore suggested are: River City, Forest Colony, Frozen Night. Potentially a few other smaller maps, based conceptually on Solaris dueling stadiums.

Smaller size of teams and more limited map rotation could mean smaller servers could be used, thus, not as costly.

Statistic et. al. to be tracked as per normal.

Business opportunity:

To satisfy a particular itch amongst a segment of the users.
Also, possibility to run specific Solaris-style tournaments on weekends.

Have put up a poll here:

Private Match mode.

Just need to wait a few more days for it.

Why restrict it to smaller maps? You're unfairly gimping certain mechs and builds by doing so. What about that ECM light mech, or the long-range build? Can't they have a go at dueling too?

That aside, it would be nice to have a Match Maker-managed 1v1 queue so that we don't have to rely on Private Matches (which would require known parties and prearranged fights).

Agreed with your points, there's a couple of reasons though:

1. The emphasis of this game mode is 1-on-1 dueling; in order to keep the tempo up and exciting for the 2 players, I'm trying to avoid a big walkaround on, say, Alpine. It's hard enough from time to time to find the bloody enemy team on that map, two mechs trying to find each other is going to be hard if they don't cooperate. To avoid that, I proposed smaller maps so that the odds are better. Both River City and Forest Colony IMO has enough variation in terrain to allow for a crafty pair of duelist to use multiple stratagems, yet have a fight within the time limit.

2. 1-on-1 dueling is a specific combat type that would benefit from building your Mechs in a specific way. Yes, certain team-emphasized builds would suffer. Which is why this mode is suggested to be an opt-in option rather than a opt-out -- people choosing to play this mode knows what they are getting into. While I don't see why some team combat builds won't have a problem, we also should reward players who thought ahead and built specifically to duel -- otherwise, there's lesser incentive to do so.

You can do this soon ™

Only if you have premium time and only if you set it up yourself.

Btw, you can't earn cash or xp
