It seems to be the big draw in the clan packages. I'm asking here because I assume it gained its popularity in other Battletech-licensed products.

The Timber Wolf has been the "face" of Battletech since the creation of the Level-2 rules and the Clan invasion. It has appeared more often than almost any other on printed materials and video games.

It was on the box art, in the intro cinematics, etc.? Really OP? Piloted by main characters?

It's one of the best loadouts in Battletech, especially around 3050. It can engage at any range, move at a ludicrous speed, tank hits like nobody's business, and handle everything from infantrymen to assault mechs with ease.

It's a monster truck on legs.

Yes it was on pretty much all promotional material for the PC games... it was the only mech that got any screen time in the MW2 intro and it had a heavy presences in the Table top game too. It was actually not piloted by that many main characters specific. But in the books one of the main clan heroes outside of the clan Wolf ones piloted one and it was present at a very key moment in his arc.

To put it simply... FASA pimpied the living daylight out of it. =P

Honestly, the Timber Wolf is pretty overrated. I would take my Summoner over the Timber Wolf any day. Moves just as fast, but with jumpjets, and it can be turned into a wicked brawler. Think UAC/20, SSRM 6, and a LPL (C variant, by the way, with a little tweaking).

*Big opening chatter about damage*

Timberwolf 1: "Roger I've got him"

PEW PEW PEW PEW *BOOM*

Timberwolf 2: "IT'S GOT LOCK ON ME! IT'S GOT LOCK ON *BOOM*"

(Chorus of Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)
*DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA*

Mech warning system: "Warning, ammunition level critical"

*DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA*

Mech warning system:"Weapon depleted"

Comm Channel: "Alpha assault, this is HQ what is your situation"

*Summoner(Thor) aims Boom stick at the cockpit...and BOOM, 1 leg left of TW2*

This is why it is adored!

Despite the fact it never did arm day.....or leg day.

Man the TW was just lazy.

Anyone remember the first time you meet a Timberwolf in MC1? Detonate the fuel tanks and likely lose the chance to salvage it, or go for the headshot and likely lose half your lance. Good times.

Or take a small fast mech over the bridge that gets bombed at the beginning of the mission, destroy the tanks waiting on the other side, then lure the Timberwolf out of it's hiding, run your little mech to the small base in the north and capture the turrets and leave through the north exit. Do not engage the Timber with your little mech, if you want to keep it, as by now it should already be hurting badly from the tanks and the turrets. Then throw your artillery strikes at the Timber till the cockpit goes and restart the mission because again the mech blew up / its loadout got destroyed.

It's probably the one mission in MechCommander I restarted most often. When I finally manage to get the mech with all equipment intact, I finish the rest of the mission. The next mission is then easy, because all you need to win it, is the fully equipped Timberwolf. Enjoy the bonus earnings for a low tonnage drop.

It was on the cover of the original TRO3050 and the cover of MW2. It was featured heavily in the MechCommander series as well as Cresent Hawks Revenge.

Along with what everyone else mentioned, the Timberwolf also appears in Scribblenauts (sort of).
The more you know!
