I'm playing on a 42" Plasma and the experience is awesome :)

The catches are... I only have about 30" between me and the TV. Despite visible pixels, it's still fun and immersive. I've been doing it for about 1.5 months, mainly because it's fun. I've noticed my accuracy dropped way off and there's noticeable input lag. I turned on game mode on the TV and it helped a bit, but there's still perceptible input lag. It's caused my performance to drop a bit, but my fun to skyrocket! Does anyone have any further suggestions for toning down the input lag? I'm pretty sure this is just par for the course, but figured it worth asking. I'll eventually migrate back to my monitor... but WOW is it immersive. I set my FOV to 90 degrees, and having to turn my head to look to the sides really adds fun.

Sidebar - the massive heat radiating from the TV adds to the immersion lol

System specs
Intel Core i7 3770k liquid cooled delidded at 4.9ghz
32gb ddr3
3 x HiS Radeon 7950 boost cards in crossfirex (tried with/without crossfire, made no difference to lag)
Windows 8 Pro (tested win 7 pro as well, same lag)
AMD catalyst 14.3? I think. Whatever's current as of *today*.
TV connected to hdmi1 via... hdmi (tested with a different TV with DVI - less lag, but it was a different TV.)

This isn't game-breaking, I don't *need* a solution, but if anyone had any input on the subject I'd be glad to hear it ;)

I play dual monitor with my primary being a TV. Not nearly as big as yours, but indeed, the experience is well worth it. However, I've not had any lag issues with the TV, even while dual monitoring. I did have some input lag while playing on another computer though (at work), but it hasn't as good a build as I have so... My guess is that it is related to your hardware software (because your hardware seems awesome), but I have no idea which part =P

Actually, I have no idea what I'm talking about. It could actually be your TV. You may completely disregard this post =P

Turn off all image processing/enhancements/scaling from the TV if possible. Use the native resolution of the TV. That works with my video projector atleast.

All hdtv's will have input lag. They are not built the same way that computer monitors are. Your best bet to get a big screen and not break the bank is to get a projector with 1080p support. Epson has some good deals and as far as lag goes on the projectors its probably a 2ms delay at best. Which is really good. Play on 105" and have some fun ;)

This yes. Try to get one with an LED module and not massive bulb/lamp. Expensive, and crap out easy in dusty environments. Lots of hitting involved as it dies, etc.

That's correct. Almost all TV's are "slower" than a PC display.

Yep, what others above have said. Generally whenever considering a screen for gaming, look for the listed response time (2 or 3ms and lower is good). There aren't usually settings on the tv that will help this, it's all about the response time. I tried playing on my 52", but the lag was driving me batty.

If it has a 'Game' mode make sure you are using that.

Thanks for the replies all - I'm using game mode, its a 6 year old vizio, I believe (not at home ATM) - the newer tv that worked ok was a 240hz set (wife was not understanding of the pc in the living room). I think I'm going to just go back to my normal (27" 2540x1440) monitor and stop mucking about :P

Thanks for the replies. I'm betting it's due largely to being an old TV. I've always been a light specialist, and I've noticed my results with lights have *tanked* since I've been playing on the TV. Man is it fun though... I even spent the time to set up my joystick with MWO - I kinda understand why people set up simpits now..

I've been running a 40" LCD TV for a couple of years. No input lag for me.

Hey Fiero, I'll toss my PC on the TV when I get the chance this week and let you know what I see.

42 and 46 Vizio LCD TV, no video lag that I have noticed. You are using a Plasma but I am not sure how the PC plays on those.

On the monitor vs Plasma, are you using the same resolution?

Greetings all,

Reference the large Tv,

Insure that your configuring the correct display settings at the desktop,
- right click and select screen resolution
- from there select 'advanced settings'
- a pop up window will appear, select the monitor tab
(if the specific Tv brand and size is not showing and it shows 'generic "what-ever"' listed you are only using default windows drivers and probably do not have the correct perimeters running for the capability of that Tv. That's refresh, resolution, operating Hz.)

- at the top right select the 'properties' button
- another pop up window will appear, select 'update driver'
- another pop up, select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
- popup will change to new window, select 'let me pick from a list of device drivers'
- window will change again, uncheck the 'show compatible hardware' box,
( a new listing will appear under this and have all the various manufacturers, check if the Tv's listed under that with the actual model version, if not select the closest resolution and Hz rated Tv from the top 'generic Tv selections.)

What this will do is load an ini file that tells the computer all the available screen sizes, resolutions, and Hz that can be run for that monitor/Tv. When you normally get a new monitor, if there are not drivers included then the manufacturer will have them at there site for download. This should be done for any display device, windows tries to keep an updated list of brands and resolutions but the market changes very fast. Some devices are configured specifically to tell windows what there performance display settings are and it's automatic, so no need to install any drivers. (others or brand new, not so much.)

Hope this may help with getting a bit more out of the Tv.

Additional note, do you have the 'display port' available for input on the Tv? The HDMI is splitting the video and sound signals and sending both, if your not running the Tv's speakers, drop that to display port for only video signal.

Was playing on my 50" Panasonic Viera plasma for the last couple years before it bit the dust recently...never noticed any input lag.

Ah - this is an old thread so I'll try to catch it up. I gave up playing on a TV because this particular set is known for its input lag. I've been looking at a swiki 50" 4k because it's supposed to be able to rock 120hz over hdmi (usually requires dvi or displayport). This wasn't originally a big deal, but ENERGY Finally talked me into a gaming monitor. I'm shopping for 27" 144hz at the moment. I got to try a 144 and after experiencing it.... I need it :)

The input lag wasn't a big deal most of the time, it was just really noticeable when running lights, or doing snap shots with ballistics. Thanks for the replies! If you use a tv, use game mode, it decreases lag more than anything else.

36 inch LED TV. No input lag. Using HDMI input.

I'm told it's unhealthy (for the TV) for games / repetitive images on plasma TVs which was why I sought out an LED one.

Yeah, it can cause burn-in. I will say, playing on a big screen that is waaaaay too close was FUN, but not super effective. I set the FOV to 90 degrees and sat 2-3 feet from it and the immersion was great. It would be excellent if there was a single player campaign mode.

what's your budget for a new Gaming TV/Monitor? I'm guessing 27"+ & 144Hz@1080P+ is required.

Looks like I'm in for 500-600 bucks :|

Still self-rationalizing :P
