Should MWO have a free roam spectator cam? For example as you die you chose to spectate another player in cockpit view only. I feel like you chould have 3 cam modes. Cockpit, 3rd person follow and free roam.

This would be intagrated like the 3rd person drones (to stop rigde pecking). Here is an example of what that free cam would look like.

They can be seen and visable in a match with there own HUD. Maybe later they can be taken out for a few extra XP or C-bills. Maybe have an acheavemnt called "Drone hunter".

A fully free spectator mode would need to have a server-authorized delay, otherwise it could be a powerful scouting tool. It is the same issue that made 3PV into the horrible thing it is.

Then it would be good if people die thay can scout around and help the team. This will be useful aganst afk mechs or mechs shutdown hideing like cowards. Do you see my point who would "not" want this power! :D

The problem is, if you die early, your team gets a free scout with perfect visibility of the entire map. This would be a huge thing on bigger maps in higher skill brackets. Heck, it could even make sense to suicide into free scouting. And if it is available, it will be used to full effect, not just by accident.

The way to solve that issue during the tournament was to introduce a delay. That way you get the visuals, but no freebies. And that worked, so it would be a great feature for public matches.

Yeah i can see what you mean but all the meta mech bull**** and all that. It can be dammaged and distroyed so that will stop that problem. It is visable like a mech, has armor like a mech but only very little like 15 armor for the entire thing that will stop any OP. You get a XP bones, damage etc if you take out the scout.

It is like another change to play insted of perma death. So if you get your drone use it wisely otherwise when it gets destroyed it will be perma death like. "Signal lost" and a staric screan for a few seconds and back to 3rd/cockpit view.

After-game replay with free cams like on the last tournament would satisfy all aesthetic and learning requirements, I'd rather vote for that.

Yeah, that would work. A player-controlled UAV activated after destruction would be an interesting addition.

It is good for youtube as well recording the action with a player controled UAV

If people could be trusted to not be ignorant, this would be awesome. This is why lawn-darts can't be bought, we all suffer for the ignorance of some.

sadly its not going to happen - there would always be people abusing this funktion - even if you would not allow chat for dead players they still could use it via TS

Hell no! This would make dying as soon as possible a viable tactic for teams on teamspeak.

A free cam in real matches? No -- though that would be a neat scouting module; controllable UAV.

Now one as an option in private matches would be nice for filming.

Greetings all,

This has been mentioned before by the Dev.'s, specifically for capturing action from a 'Saved' battle.

- Hopefully offering various options for 'getting just that right angle' for making movies.
- Offering replay options to assist in training and tactics work.
- Combine this with private match's and a unit can produce there own formation and tactics videos for requites.

All allowing separate and different editing perimeters and viewing choices.
- Both Bryan and Russ have discussed the ability to save mission playbacks.
- May actually be needed or required for some of the future contracts that require gathering intel on a location.

We have a working version that is being used for the commentators during Tourney match's, and the 'personal' version is stated to have many additional options and features.

I'd prefer post game reply with a spectator cam. This was shout casters could use footage from the best angle to... erm... shout over.

Greetings all,

If there was a 'free flight' mode it should not be something that can be accessed 'during' a match.
- Having the ability to select 'Save Match Playback' with a description of the file size should be an option.
(possibly set this up in the advanced setting's window on where the file will be saved for later playback.)

The example of the small drone is nice but with the different environments each map could offer, other propulsion methods should be considered. And this Drone would need to be somewhat larger for the ability to 'last' the entire 15 or 20min match.
- Possibly have it hover at a height of 1000 mtrs with advanced zoom abilities.
- Give it the directional movement requirements but only at the 1000 mtrs height.

If only used during a 'playback' event then it's capabilities are changed and it can move anywhere on the Battle grid.
(as a note here, the Beagle Probe is listed as having the ability to 'playback' the recorded battles for 'after action reports' and training simulations.)

A Battle Field Drone was being discussed as an additional item for the Command Console, something that could only be used if that element was mounded on a Mech and 'requested'.
(haven't head a peep about it since the first idea was mentioned by the Dev.'s.)

A free-flight drone after death? No way. Groups using TS would abuse it too easily.
The ability to have (and save?) an after match replay using free-flight? AWESOME (and not the Mech).

As an added thought? What about a component, say, 3 tons, 3 crits, that launches a small drone that you take control of. While said drone is in flight, you have NO CONTROL over your mech, and, if you return to the mech, you lose the drone. Also, the drone would have very low HP, and if shot down, would also be lost. Consider it a "Weapon" that costs 2t, with a 1 ton ammo of 1 Drone. Not targetable, but visible, like the UAV. Probably not FAST either, but those are details that could be tweaked.

I would be nice if you could at least have a free cam on the training grounds. Mostly just so I can get some external screenshots of my own mech.

Not a bad idea at all.

One of the problems in round based games (e.g. like counter strike) is always that if you die first you are out of game and bored to hell. Of course, in MWO you could quit match and rejoin in another mech if you are in public queue, in group play that is not possible.

However, the free spectator mode could give players a second chance. Instead of being useless they remain control of the command UI and can launch every 5 min a UAV that is controllable but otherwise can be attacked and destroyed like a regular UAV.

This would also reduce the disadvantage for the team that lost a mech because they get advanced reconnaissance.

Yes, but you'd have to do this to keep them from being OP spy tools:
  • In the normal queue selector, add an option to be a "spectator." It picks a match (group or solo) and you can fly around and film in the free cam without taking up a player slot. Maximum of, say, four spectators per match. No VoIP and no chat though.
  • In the group queue (if you are in a group and spectating), you have a limited flight range around/nearby a Mech and disable VoIP/chat. Maximum of one spectator per match.
  • In lobbies, you'd need premium to use it I imagine.
