I've been playing a Firestarter and a DDC since I got back but I really miss the feel my old Phract build gave me. CTF 1x with 5 LL and an XL, it had the speed punch and versatility to really adapt well to any situation (important since I pug exclusively). I'm pretty sure that build is no longer viable thanks to ghost heat, and the phracts low survivability even with a std is probably an issue with clan mech alphas, but has anyone got a mech/build that might be comparable? (and isn't an overpriced clan mech..)
Many many new mechs have been added since I stopped playing and I really haven't gotten remotely caught up on which ones are worth while. I've played pretty much every weight class in the game at some point or another, but at least at the time that build seemed to fit me well.

I still run a 5 LL stalker with great success. I just use chain fire and two groups of two.

Sticking to IS: consider the Banshee, either 3M or (especially) 3S.
1. Both can zombie with a Head hardpoint; the 3S also has one in CT.
2. Neither has Arm hardpoints, which gives you TWO shield-arms.
3. They each pack so many energy hardpoints (7 for 3S; 8 for 3M) that the Awesome has yet another reason to beg for buffs.
The 3S's only real drawback is that its RT is overloaded with hardpoints; so it's a juicy target. The 3M distributes hardpoints better between the side torsos.

Try my 51 damage alpha blackjack 1x, but to make it really shine you need to speed tweak it for 116.8kph

Hunchback 4P with 9 energy hardpoints. Hard to handle all that heat but fun.
Trebuchet 5J is awesome. A fast jumping energy boat.
Jester just sucks.

Awesome became awesome at energy boating in the last patch, his new quirks are just silly.
Many Clan mechs make great energy boats.

Seconded. AWS 8Q or 9M make great energy boats now, mainly due to this:
- All Awesomes:
- -12.5% heat generated by energy weapons
- +10% faster heat loss
- +17% Center Torso (front) armor
- -12.5% heat generated by energy weapons

Light Show (Version 1.1, after they added the right arm's hand actuator to the critical table I had to cut heat sink #22, replaced it with the AMS.) Really fun to use mech, just play it like a super-heavy skirmisher, stay at mid-range if you can.
Light Show II (Haven't tried this myself yet.) EDIT: After trying it for a few drops, I downgraded the pulses to normal MLs, and swapped the ERLLs out for PPCs. And it works pretty nicely.
