The first machine with the HD4000 will not run it, or will not run it acceptably, however the second machine will run it okay. I think the GPU is an Iris Pro 5200, specifically, which puts it inline with modern midrange dedicated chips. Notebook check says it's just a little behind the GT650M in power.

Also, nether CPU will serve you well: Teh first is a dual-core (poorly regarded for Cryengen games,) and the second is lacking greatly in Hz …

The fact you have given two options would suggest you own neither and are seeking advice.

So question, why an overpriced laptop with a special case and fruitful name, instead of a better gaming laptop?

Intel i5 processors are quad core, not dual core.

I do agree that they are not ideal gaming machines. But macs rarely are.

notebook i5's are dualcores.

anyway, I wouldn't expect it to run well. might be playable on very low resolution.

In short, I have a ton of frequent flier miles I can redeem for one of them (or some other computer in the catalog. Due to recent developments I cannot forsee ever using the miles for a flight, and my current laptop is dying...

Yeah this is what I was concerned about- would it be unplayable, or 15FPS "Playable", or...?

You need to be at ~45fps to interact with light 'Mechs.

Damn free laptop? Well you can't argue with that :)

You have two options here:

1.) Get the laptop, use it; MWO will be playable, probably at a mix of low and medium settings and maybe 720p

2.) Get the most expensive MBP you can afford, don't open it, sell it as new for some obscene sum on Ebay or Amazon, use said obscene sum to get a more powerful computer

I've run Mwo on my work mbpro (iris pro) - it's ok at 1920x1080 on low, my other mbp with discrete graphics 650m, runs it better. Either way you're not gonna play at retina resolution :)

Just as an aside, how would this stack up?

Helpful (to you, but to me it is largely incomprehensible ;)) link.

Not well, intel's onboard GPU's are rather lacklustre.

How bad is it, really? Is it worse than the iris pro? Or just the iris? A LOT worse? unplayably bad?

Because the other stats on it look quite nice, and the price is right (although tigerdirect has gotten a lot of bad press, which makes me hesitate...)

Oh wow. That one looks super sexy.

Any objections?

I have no idea how to compare mobile video cards to the recommended (desktop) video cards.

Or integrated graphics stuff, for that matter.

It's not terrible, but that CPU is a ULP chip, so it's going to suck for MWO.

Crazy, are you intended to just plop down some cash potentially, or are you considering my suggestion to grab the 15" MBP (the second model you listed) and sell it for the funds? If it's the latter, you'd have no less than $1200 to play with, and likely upward of $1400 or $1500, if you look at current ebay listings for that model.

It looked like he didn't really want to go above $700, hard to find a good game machine in that range. I think for the price, that Toshiba is pretty darn good.

It's definitely hard to find a gaming laptop at $700, a desktop no, but a laptop? Hell yes. Mine was just shy of $1100 when I bought it, it was midrange and barely adequate for a number of games (though quite good in others), and prices haven't really changed since then. Frankly I don't plan to spend less than $1500 when I buy next summer.

That's why I was wondering what his plans were.

I'd prefer to hover around 1k if possible. (not even sure what would be acceptable for MW:O amongst those).

OTOH PGI already has my soul, so I guess I can just start selling my organs if push comes to shove.
