Was just in a match and seen a guy with a character name Johnny something or other. I have seen many similar names with slight differences but never exactly the same. Is this allowed?

Most games do not allow this I think.

It's allowed.

As long as the name is available and is not automatically rejected for being an exact copy of some one else's.

This is bullshit. Bordering on greifing. I have never seen any game where a name can be copied exactly like this. Not even this game. Why is this allowed.

Names can not be copied in an identical manner.

Johnny Z is different from JohnnyZ, and Johnny Z (2 spaces for this one). It's the same exact system with every single game out there.

Identical names are not allowed, but similar is okay in every game out there.

Lies, you shouldnt be able to exactly copy the first name in a video game, any video game nor the last.

Question is why the lies?

By the way your lying about something that is common knowledge, publicly.

Sorry to quote you when the rest of the replies have been lies or trolls also.

And more importantly why is this game allowing it in this characters case only it seems.

I am surprised that this has been allowed to go this far in fact.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.

There are no other users with the name "Johnny Z" like yours. They need to modify it, by either removing the space, or adding another space, or different character.

Right now, the only one trolling is you, if you consider your responses.

Seriously, this is the exact same system as every other game out there. Usernames cannot be replicated. However, similar usernames are allowed in all games. You don't believe me.

Go find a username in any game you play, and try and make a name similar to it (not identical. Similar. add an x before or after it. Or put a space, or use a 2 instead of a Z... etc.)

So character names are allowed to be copied exactly in other games as is being done here?
I have to say this has not been my experience.

Im not sure what your talking, this topic is about in game character name, not about username. So some mid tier trolling changing the goal posts.

Although I had no idea that such similar user names were common on other forums. Thanks

Character name/username is the same thing here. Your name on the forums is Johnny Z, and it's the same name you have in the game.

Now, if there is a misunderstanding in the definitions here, I would love for you to explain it, as that would allow us to better answer you.

However, what I can say, is that no one else can get the exact same username you have (Johnny Z). Not with that spelling, and single space between Johnny, and Z.

What people are trying to say is that Identical names are not possible ingame or in the forums, but like any game similar names are possible and premitted

Examples of similar names
Johnny Z (Your username)
Johnny Z (2 Spaces between the words EDIT: Apparently the forum filters out additional spaces between words, so it is displayed identical to your name in the post, but the name will be displayed differently)
JohnnyZ (no space)
Johnny 2 (The number 2 instead of the letter Z)
Jonny Z (Different spelling)

EDIT2: The name in the forums and the player name in the game are always identical. As far as I know ysou will never see someone with a different name ingame than in the forums (Alternative accounts excepted, but even here the forum names and game names of these accounts will be identical)

Identical names are impossible.

Very similar names (such as substituting a character) are possible, jut like everywhere else.

If someone is explicitly using a name similar to yours for the purpose of griefing you then that's probably a violation, but if he just happens to have a similar name then get over it. If someone is griefing you get a screenshot.

There is another player named Redshift, and there are other Redshifts elsewhere on the internet. No big deal.

I am glad I do not grief myself. Be sad to have one of me report my other self for griefing and get myself banned. :)

Johnny Z, what you have to be aware of is that MWO allows more than a first name (more than one word) on account creation, MWO does not restrict it to an initial 1st name. The game name is also the same as the forum name. So your account/game name is Johnny Z. As mentioned there could be a Johnny, a Z Johnny, a Johnny S, etc. Each of those names are similar but they are also unique because they are NOT identical.

I will use Everquest as an example, and I believe this is where you may be approaching this. The account name is the same as the forum name (until/unless you change the forum nickname). Others can have a similar account name but not identical. Now to create a toon name (2 to 10/12 toons) they start off with only a First name that is unique. Move/combine servers and your name will get an X on the end of it if there is already another toon name Johnny there 1st. On EQ last names are not unique.

So, two systems that do have unique names but each approach it differently, EQ with initial 1st/1name and MWO with multiple words/letters allowed.

They absolutely positively cannot have the same name. It can be close (technically johnny z with two spaces or a 0 instead of an O or something would certainly appear similar to human eyes depending on font) but never the same.
