When picking what warmachine you want to pilot, do you care more about variants and possible loadouts, or look and feel? Personally, even if it was the most powerful mech in the game, if it didn't look 'cool' to me, I wouldn't play it.

What about yourself? Aesthetics or practicality?

Ex. I think the Ares looks incredibly cool, but it probably has to be the most impractical hunk of steel ever made.

While I lean much more for the function side, asthetics do play a small role for me, it could be the best mech possible for my playstyle yet I might not choose it because in my opinion, it is butt-ugly("might" being a key word, it really comes down to how I feel that day).

I'd never choose a Mech that doesn't have the right amount of sex appeal ;)

Well I'd like to say function over form, but if something is just too ugly to bear it probably won't get driven. Luckily enough they seem to be doing a great job on giving us presentable mechs so far, so lets hope that trend continues.

Looks don't bother me. I need the right tool for the job.

a bit of both, i won´t drive a mech just for the looks, but also i won´t drive an ugly pile of junk just because its powerful...

if it hits both my taste of looks and demands for functionality, it´s a good mech :)

I will drive what I feel will give my current team composition the most usefullness regardless of how it looks.... honestly if you cant be bothered to field the mech that gives your team the best odds because it's ugly you have no buisness playing a team game.

Looks followed by how usefull and efficient it is.
If i do not like the look of a mech I'm not interested.

Efficiency above all else, i am wondering about how long each mission is, will energy based weapon mech have any advantage etc

supposedly around 20 mins a match.

Energy weapons don't use ammo so thats a plus but they are short duration dots in this one rather than being all damage up front like ammo based weapons... Thats how I understand it anyway... Means you will have to hold your bead on them for a few seconds

Dont really care about looks, i would choose the best mech for my role. But with the mechlab, im sure i can make one of the less used mechs into one that will suit my needs.

Look and feel somewhat but more on my mood. Do I want to go out and punch someone in the head with AC's or something with less punch but more agility/speed.

Style over substance any day of the week, the best mech on the table is the one with the best paintjob & hand-painted insignia; The best mech in the game is the one with the best model & skin (usually a Timber, let's be fair ;)).

Imo, the entire premise of Mech combat is style over substance anyway; Choosing the most effective mech when mechs as a concept are about as ineffective a weapon as could be imagined is like a logical oxymoron.
(but that said I can totally see their PoV).

But you must compromise in any team game, so if I need a scout, I'll use a sexy little number like a Raven, or Cougar (if I can go clan), but all things being equal, I'll just choose the best looking chassis & make it work. :D

Aesthetics matter to me, quite a bit.

Atlases and other armor heavy humanoids are some of my favorites. Giant space stompy death robot knights have an enduring place in the cockles of my heart.

Some of the absurd chicken leg ones as well... Bushwacker especially. As far as function, I'm partial to a solid spread of weapons. Most of my favorites get a very minor redesign in consolidating ammo to one torso location and addition of CASE.

As far as it goes, the [post='http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Shadowhawk']Shadowhawk[/post] has one of my favorite loadouts. With the -5M update, it hits all the high points I like. Stock or -5M, it has LRMs for long range harassment, an AC/5 for poking holes consistently, and some extra punch at close range with the SRM and ML. Tabletop, if I kept the SRM2, I'd run specialty ammo (inferno). Most often, I'd prefer to reduce the risk of slagging the mech by dropping the small launcher for more medium lasers to add to battlefield endurance.

I'd like to imagine how that mech would fit my play style. Can I imagine myself having a good impact on the battlefield with said mech? How would I play it? Passive, aggressive? Harasser/spotter or something like an anti scout that shuts down the enemy scouts, shooing them away from your back lines to keep the enemy blind.

What weaponry does it have, and how is it best used to achieve the goals I see as my niche-role in the battle? Am I better off flanking or holding the line. Perhaps staying back at distance to provide heavy fire support?

Can you see yourself doing that job well?

Once you figure that out, I guess the rest just kind of falls into place.

I want a mech that has a decent balance, something that can pack a decent punch and that has some utility. I ened up choosing the cat for my founders mech because I felt it was well balanced.

I Love making mechs with gauss rifles and LRM20's can't get enough of that death from 800+M away, more firepower with little worry about heat problems =)
