Personally...Function over form.

Hell if i can go slinging 80 LRMS at my enemy but my mech looks like a walking missile pod, ..i really could care less.

but I do like a good mix of Speed, Armor, and firepower, i think when the Raven comes...ill be happy
Till then...ill do with modifying everything i can to pi$$ people off with awesome mechs ^___^

In general, you can take most mechs to the mechlab and pump out similar weapon configurations, although PGI seems to be choosing very different mechs as their starters. So aesthetics do play a huge role for me.

As far as hardpoints go, I usually don't lean to mechs with all 3 hardpoint types, typically just the 2 direct fire types. I enjoy specializing and choosing weapons based on effective range, so my mech would have to be capable of doing that.

Speed is also an issue, I don't like slow mechs. When I run assault I tend to strip out a weapon or two for a bigger engine. so I tend to reach for the mediums or heavies.
That said, I'm looking forward to the Hunchback and the Cataphract. I may also play around with an Awesome if I have the budget for it.

while looks of the mech is something I can get into....what the mech can or can not not do is more important.

I want to be the best I can be at whatever role im going to play in a battle so I am going to pick the mech I can best do my job in no matter how it looks.

I'll look at the stats and pick the mech that will be best for the job in hand. Be that support, attack or scout.

How pretty it looks isn't as important as how well it functions ^_^

I want a mech which im comfortable with in playstyle, which can deal a decent amount of damage and is still able to avoid enemy fire or even withstand a reasonable amount of damage.

So i`ll probably play alot of medium mechs and heavy mechs.
That`s why i picked the catapult which can deal damage from long range and has some decent armour.

I'd like to imagine how that mech would fit my play style. Can I imagine myself having a good impact on the battlefield with said mech? How would I play it? Passive, aggressive? Harasser/spotter or something like an anti scout that shuts down the enemy scouts, shooing them away from your back lines to keep the enemy blind.

What weaponry does it have, and how is it best used to achieve the goals I see as my niche-role in the battle? Am I better off flanking or holding the line. Perhaps staying back at distance to provide heavy fire support?

Can you see yourself doing that job well?

Once you figure that out, I guess the rest just kind of falls into place.

I personally prefer mechs that can work at multiple ranges, like the Atlas and Centurion. They have it covered from LRM's to AC's and LL/ML's. I can Indirect fire at long range, direct and indirect fire at medium range, and can direct fire with all of my weapons, minus the LRMs, at close range. I like to keep my options open. Although I might have to get the Trebuchet, to try fire support out in a cheaper platform. And I think, initially, I'll avoid mechs with jump jets, until I figure out what control scheme I'm going to use (joystick, gamepad, or mouse/keyboard). Although if the prime variant of the Cataphract doesn't come with JJ, I may go for it. So many choices...

I like my mech to look good, but I also want it to have great control and function. For example I would never use an Urbanmech, r2d2 garbage can lookin thing, no thanks.

Id pick a mech to get the job done but it has to look decent, doesnt have to look so good that ill have freaky sex with it. Aslong as its not an urban mech then most mechs probably tick the box lol

Just to muddy the waters on my previous post, the reason I'm not wearing my orange Elite tag yet is because I can't make my mind up on style over substance. (or form over function to use the more polite language used above)

Style tells me the power armour Mk4 Catapult is just crazy sexy (as far as uggerly fat robots can be sexy) so if I'm going to spend a fair bit of time in it, choose one that looks good; But Substance tells me take an Atlas because it'll be a more "effective" use of the founder's bonus & will give a sh**tonne of weapons I can put on my cheap starter mech (which could be anything).

I'm leaning 60/40 toward style. B)

I like having fast mechs, that punch in your face seriously, so my money is usually on heavies (Orion, Black Knight, I certainly will have a Mad Cat, when the time comes), or the more agile assaults, like: Templar, Awesome, Blood Asp (with 360 torso?! sure :D), although I sometimes go crazy and than the ******* with LBX-es come in play, and then mayhem :D (Gladiator, Daishi, Atlas, Battlemaster, Annihilator with 4 LBXs XD)

I'm usually running a mental check list before a match.

1. Map
2. Tactics
3. Weapons
4. Mech(s)
(5. Looks)

I am something of a freak about customizing my variants to the T, so what designers may have envisioned for a mech matters little to me. I stick to the general spirit of a mech, so the 'role' it takes is important to me as well, but I'm all aesthetics. Hell, half the time, I can't even give myself an odd number of a weapon on a mech.

Guess that's just the OCD in me.

I don't care much about the look of it. Of course, if it looks better then that is definitely a bonus.

I mostly look for speed or long-range capabilities. I'm going to pilot a Raven, and replace the SRM-6 with an LRM 10.

For me it's all about variety. In MW 2 and 3 it more or less didn't matter on what mech you took but it's weight class. In MW4 I usually used the less seen mechs on pub servers - Zeus, Chimera, Bushwacker, Hellhound, Argus, Mauler, that sort of thing. The thing I loved about the game was the variety, and seeing nothing but Nova Cats, Thors, Lokis, Black Knights, and Executioners got old real fast. I made it my mission to use the less used, and to use loadouts that were more in spirit of the TT instead of bulking out ERLLs, PPCs, LBX20s, or Gauss rifles. Granted most TT loadouts were horrible, I'd still spread my weapons around instead of boating.

I did have a Mad Cat that i fell in love with - 2 heavy large lasers, LBX5, and 2 ATM12Ms. Otherwise, IS mechs, and the neglected ones at that. From what I've seen so far from this I'll probably be sticking with the Hunchback, Centurion, Cataphract, and Trebuchet in my bay.
