This is my attempt at 'Mech modelling #3. This time I was inspired by Bishop Steiner's excellent sketch and re-imagining of the Assassin, in my opinion a very aesthetically pleasing design:

Posted Image

There's a few other reasons I chose it; I'm still practicing modelling based on reference, and also that the Assassin's torso is more uniquely shaped rather than just being cubic, hence trying to get myself to move away from building 'Mechs out of cubes (Orion anyone?).

Currently I've pretty much just blocked out the base shapes. It's not very pretty, and I really haven't done Bishop's drawing any justice, so sorry about that Bishop. :P

Biggest problem is the torso. I can't figure out how to get the shape to work right, and I just plain suck at shapes more complex than cubes anyway. And don't get me started on proportions...

Posted Image

Original torso idea:

Posted Image

Modified torso (has empty slots for weapons, maybe):

Posted Image

It's completely missing any torso internals or the entire back side...

Anyway, so if anyone's interested I might post updates as I add onto it. I'm not really sure if it's going to work out at all, but every time I work on a new model I feel like I learn a bit more. I hope Bishop doesn't mind me borrowing his sketch to work from. I kinda butchered your torso... :P

WOW!!!!!

I like it...not to throw a wrench in the gears...but did you see I updated it?
Posted Image
narrowed the side torsos some to make it more in line with the original, reworked the legs, and then just some doodling fluff differences.

Anyhow...that looks amazing so far! And kinda flattered it Inspired. Feel like doing the Vulcan next? ;)

Anyhow, it's posts like this one that inspire me to pick up my pencil again, even when I feel like "why bother"?

Also remember...2D art and 3D reality almost never work out. But I like the way you took the torso in the 3rd pic. I hope you keep working on it!
Partly because it might be 3D printable!

Oops... no I didn't, thanks for pointing that one out. :) I'm still working out shapes so it shouldn't be too hard to modify it to better suit that sketch.

Anyway, I'm glad you like it! Your art is amazing, so it's the least it deserves. I'm happy to give your Vulcan a go after this one, looks like a challenge to model shape wise so should be interesting. :)

well, your basic rigging as is, with the slightly wider shoulders is a near perfect skeleton for the Vulcan.

Be cool to see how this turns out!

Perhaps, I see what you mean. :P

Working to try and redo the legs with the other drawing, I've been looking at the lower legs and feet, but the proportions seem off to me. That, and I'm not sure I reflected the sketch very well. Is it just me? :P

I think it's just you.

On a cursory inspection, honestly, the legs look fine to me. And your lines are a lot straighter and cleaner than mine! :P

Really, at this stage, the only things I would note is the CT/Head should be a little more prominently forward, side torsos a little more narrow, and the LA "forearm" maybe 25% shorter. Maybe reduce the "biceps" length" by 10-15%. The left fist, when closed should be about even with the bottom of the hip actuator.

Assassin always had slightly ridiculous trex arms.

But as is, it's still looking real sexy to me!

An intentional design feature no doubt...thats what makes you the mechwarriors preferred designer..now to locate the bottle opener.

Great looking model too, was on the list of ones I would like to do, good choice AUSwarrior!

I haven't been able to put much time into the model lately, certain things tend to get in the way *shakes fist at exam hall* but I want to keep working on it afterwards. I did a little bit on the upper arms, though I need to remodel the right arm laser barrel and start modelling the left arm and hand. Then the upper legs, hips and torso. :P

EDIT: Also I just realized that the shoulders are too boxy. Dammit... :D

Hey!

I really like this model, the proportions are just right (where many people fail IMO), and I think you have the right amount of detail and "greebles". I went way overboard with details on some of my meshes, which makes it extremely difficult to unwrap and texture afterwards.

I'm looking forward to see more of your work.

Heh, thanks. :)

A lot of my first models were the ultimate example of 'how not to use greebles'...

Small update, changed the legs a bit, blocked out the left arm, gutted the center torso and started work on the new cockpit and center torso.

One thing I realized is that I have no idea how to model joints properly, so I'll have to do a bit more research on other models.

Heck, I'd probably be willing to buy it in the white, as is!

If you turn up your shadow samples your rendered pictures won't come out so grainy.

Otherwise Looking fantastic.
