I am thinking of buying an XL285 for my Raven 3L. Currently it has an XL280 in it.

Which mechs start out with an XL285?

Should I even bother going up to the XL285 from the XL280?

I am using the standard dual ERLL.

No mech comes with an XL285, you'd have to buy it directly.

It's a lot of CB for a few kph. IMO, as a newish player, not a great purchase. If you have a 1/2 ton to spare, throw a SL in that third energy hard point and use it in emergencies only.

No mech has an xl285 stock. You'll need to buy one off the shelf.

You would be better off buying a mech with a XL-260, or XL-275,, to use in your other 2 ravens as they can't put anything over an XL-275.. (personally i use the XL-260 in mine the last time i played them, i did not own the XL-275) But the load outs i run on them really work well, so i am not sure i would change them anyway.. then again i do need to finish mastering them so who knows, I always end up trying about 10 different load outs on the way up anyway :)

The Jager DD for the 260, or one of the 55 mediums for the XL-275 would be your best bets. I really love my wolverines and would highly recomend them. (though the one varriant with out JJ's is very much a nitch Brawler with out JJ"s, some people love it, and others hate it.)

Others say shadow hawks or griffin's the griffins are more mobile, the shadow hawks are more ballistic..

Jags, have lots of great builds and the firebrand hero is a very popular mech for down the road if you enjoy them.

The only mech that can come with one is the Banshee (3 walking movement with 95 ton, 285 = 3 * 19 * 5, so 95 tonners are the only mechs that could take it), and that has a 285 standard on one model.

Honestly, do what you want. If you have nothing better to do with the half-ton, go for it, but it's expensive c-bill wise, and not likely worth it from a pure C-Bills perspective

On the other hand, there are mechs that come with XL280s and XL275s, and while the XL280 is better in general, the XL275 can be run in other ravens. I use my XL275 just to save the coin (2-3 KPH is hardly an issue).

The only remote possibility of a 285 engine on a mech that you can buy is a 95 ton battlemech. However, there currently is no 95 ton mech with a 285 engine and if there was it would be very slow. It would allow a walking speed of 90-ish meters every 10 seconds.

BNC-3S comes with a 285, actually. Just a STD285.

We'll put that exception in, I did mean an XL 285 though.

I have spent a ton of C-bills on engines and have a vast assortment. Yes, it's costly, but I hate seeing "invalid" on a bunch of mech bays. I like to hop in a ride and go. Modules I do swap around, I have the draw the line somewhere. ;)

Seriously though, swapping engines around is a great way to save cash when you're a new player. Optimize your builds around the engine you have. As others have said, a couple kph doesn't make much difference.
