I was just wondering why we don't use the names of some Mechs such as the "Vulture" instead of calling it a "Mad Dog". As far as I know MWO is the first game to use an alternative name to these famous Mechs as their primary name. If I were to try and look up a "Mad Dog" as part of the original rules set when the game was still pen and paper, well, it's not there, but is referred to as the Vulture.

So what was with the choice to go by this alternate name system?

When the clans invaded they did not give the names of the machines they used
As such, the IS defenders came up with their own names to describe the machines
(Madcat because it is a combination of the Marauder and Catapult roughly - Vulture because of it's use on the battlefield and so on)

The names used in game (Timberwolf, Maddog) were what the invading clans called the machines - rather than what the IS knew them as.

As Shar Wolf said. The original B Tech rules are from when the cold war was still in effect, the game designers were probably influenced by the NATO habit of assigning names to Soviet aircraft and military systems that were not what the Soviets called them. So we ended up with Clan mechs having two names.

Wondered when you would show up :lol:

For fun - the Clan names and IS names of all the chassis we have so far

Kit Fox = Uller (Norse god of archery)
Mist Lynx = Koshi (Small Death)
Adder = Puma

Ice Ferret = Fenris
Nova = Black Hawk
Stormcrow = Ryoken

Maddog = Vulture (stalked the battlefield like one)
Hellbringer = Loki (utterly mad configuration)
Summoner = Thor (Thunder and Lightning)
Timberwolf = Mad Cat (Marauder-Catapult design)

Gargoyle = Man o' War
Warhawk = Masakari
Direwolf = Daishi (Great Death)

The original names are Mad Dog. Timber Wolf, Nova etc. Also MechWarrior 2 31st and Ghost Bears both used the real names.
