I am planning to upgrade to the following configuration, just looking for advice as to whether or not to change anything;

Amd a8-3870k cpu quad core 3.0ghz unlocked apu, 4mb cache, 100w 32nm
Asus f1a75-m pro motherboard
8gb ddr3 1600mhz ram
500gb sata3 6.0gb/s 16mb cache hard drive
Radeon 7750 video card
500w power source, on board 7.1 sound.

Your thoughts?

I'm going with the hd radeon 7770 overclock edition. Since your running a 500 psu you should he fine. Any reason you went with the 7750?

I'd recommend the 7770 as the baseline unless you just can't spend that extra $30.

Also since you're going with a dedicated GPU you should go for FX over A8, and a corresponding am3+ mobo.

I had considered going with;

Amd bulldozer fx-x4 4100 quad core am3+ 8mb cache
And ga-970a-d3 am3+ amd 970+sb950 mother board,

A better choice?

The only reason I'm choosing the 7770 is because it fits my psu power output

What I recommend:
PSU: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817207013

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813157280 (ATX)
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813157292 (micro-ATX)

CPU: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103727

RAM: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820103006

GPU: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814127664

HDD: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136769

It will be quite a bit faster, for not much more than you were looking at, and last longer.

Vulpesveritas's config is your best bet for price/performance.

The AMD Phenom II X4 960T is also worth looking (it has the possibility of unlocking 2 extra cores for a total of 6 cores) although it's a bit harder to find these days.

Cheers

the 965 that vup said is good the 960T that aniqu said is better and cheaper but harder to find like he said
nice timeings on that amd ram.

i prefer OZC PSU's tho and i have never had a problem with them so i would reccomend one of these

600W Modular = $67 not to sure how it works its usa thing but mail in rebate? $42.00 after mail-in rebate card so whatever that means
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817341017

OR

OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular = $89.99 and $59.99 after mail-in rebate card

I would likely have to upgrade the power source to run that as well though?

What do you guys think of the amd x6 fx-6100 six core processors at 3.3ghz?

The FX 6100 is more of an equivalent to the Phenom II X4 965 for multithread applications but still lack behind the Phenom II X4 965 in single thread performance.

i will never EVER reccomend an FX processor right now, the phenoms they replaced ARE BETTER than them just because something is newer dosent make it better.

Nah, if you go with the power supply i recommended it will be fine, As far as 6870s go, I recommend this; http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102948
Though keep in mind, a 7770 overclocked like this: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102993
will still be faster in highly tessellated titles, and CryENGINE 3 is known to be, at least in Crysis 2. Note that the 7770 is still $20 cheaper too. The 7770 will also get more driver improvements and use less power, so it really depends on what you're looking for in particular.

Thanks for the info guys. My goal is to stay as close to budget as possible, so as not to have my wife hang m e by the testicles in the yard as a warning to all other gaming husbands who may pass.

Last question, i understand that cryengine tends to favour nvidia cards, what do you think of the GTX 550 Ti, as opposed to the aforementioned ati cards?

The 550ti is slower than both by about 20-30%

And it favors the AMD Radeon HD 7000 series cards more than Nvidia cards it seems.

Either that's a mistake, or there has been some steroid use with the drivers.

Because that's another one and it doesn't really fit with the results.

And another one that's even later and more recently:

That one you posted HAS to be a mistake or something.

I see it on the website itself, and it's still there.

Had to do a doubletake and actually check the benchmarks out, cause a 7770 can't be outperforming a GTX 560 Ti. It should be slightly slower than the 6850 and faster than the 550Ti

I see a spread of results from TPU's testing.

I think W1zzard screwed up somewhere, because the benchmark from x-bit labs, benchmark reviews, and Guru3d confirm that it is indeed just slightly slower than the 6850.

It's quite possible, though i wonder what the tessellation settings are in Catalyst for each review. Might have something to do with it lol.

But yeah, the 6870 is the better bet if the OP can afford it, otherwise an OC'd 7770 is a good deal.

Alright then, that was a lot of numbers!

So a 7770, 6850, or at least a gtx 560 is apparently the way to go in budget. Let the bargaining begin!
