Recently, MWO had been running more slowly and slowly for me after each patch. It had gotten to the point where I was dipping down into the high teens with an average of about 21 FPS. I tried many different things to make it run better like lowering the resolution and turning all the options to low or turning them off altogether. It made little to no difference. I was thinking that I was going to be forced to give in and buy a newer faster processor.

I knew it wasn't my GPU, since I have a GeForce 650 ti Boost, and it should have more than enough capability to run this game. I figured the problem was my processor: a Sandy Bridge Core i3-2105 at 3.1GHz. I knew that MWO is very CPU intensive and that a quad core is the minimum recommended processor. I thought that I was going to have to give in and buy an i5 and spend about $200.

Then I remembered that sometimes turning off hyperthreading makes the processor run more efficiently and can boost performance. I went into my BIOS and disabled it. Sure enough, the game ran so much better that I was able to turn all the settings to high and raise the resolution to my monitor maximum. Now I have the game running smoothly and the game looks better than ever.

If any of you guys have Core i3 processors and are having trouble running the game, try disabling hyperthreading. It definitely helped me, and you might be able to boost your performance as well.

I'm also curious to know if disabling hyperthreading on Core i7 processors would make any difference. If any of you guys care to try it, let me know if it makes things any better.

Moving to the hardware forums.

some games don't take kindly to hyperthreading. usually it does improve performance though.

Anyway, with my pentium I don't have the luxury of worrying about this :P

… Maybe you'd be better served by reducing the number of threads call for in the user.cfg?

This is not likely to be the case if you're running an i7 with hyperthreading, but only on the i3s and mobile i5s. Never really seen any results from a mobile i7. I can tell you with certainty that it did not affect my desktop i7s though, as I ran mine both with and without (though to be fair, I also had my 2600K at 4.4GhZ, and I have my 5820K at 4.0GhZ).

The mobile chips are pretty weak, as are the i3s, so it makes a lot more sense to try and brute-force as much as you can with the physical cores instead of letting them also try to slide work off to the extra logical cores.

I looked up the benchmarks to your CPU and it scores quite a bit less than my system. This rates yours at 2602, while mine scores 3753. I guess there is a limit to how slowly a system can run and still benefit from my suggestion.

I have had it for a rather long time, I suspect it might be upgrade time.

I ran mwo on the first gen i7 920 and turning off HT did improve performance, less sudden fps drops as well.
Currentlt running 4th gen i7 4770k. No issue with leaving HT on.

Thank you very much OP¡

I have a i3 530 @4.4Ghz and 560ti and it went from unplayable to playable with the lowest setting possible at 1080p. It is the first time i see an increment in the perfomance by doing this btw.
