G'day,
Although there are a number of variations that you can go with, I see the AH as the Centurion model, designated to use the AC20 as its principal weapon. The AC20 has good hitting power compared to other cannon armed variants. Maybe some future advantages with quirks? Like yourself, am not comfortable with an XL engine in a Centurion. The problem was squeezing in the biggest standard engine with the number of slots and weight. At the same time, not compromising secondary weapons and reloads. This is the build that I go with:

Full armour. Four tons of ammo (28 shots) for the AC20. Am using 3 x SRM2's as secondaries, with one ton (100 missiles) reload. Figure this fires faster than the 1 x SRM4 + 1 x SRM2 with a 150 missile reloads. Also that extra half ton better protects the legs where the AC20 ammunition is stored.
When using, always try to torso twist. Twist left to open up the right to fire AC20 or missiles, then back to the right to let the cannon reload and present the left shield as protection. Weapon group the AC20 as 1, SRM's as 2 and the AC20 as 3,4,5. The last is so you can see the loading progress indicator on the target recticle.
With this build, I find that I tend to have reduced centre torso exposure with the main weapon mounted on the right arm instead of the left torso with other popular builds for the AH. With machine guns and dual AC2's mounted in the right arm, these tend to require a fix upon the target for prolonged periods and leaving your centre torso vulnerable.
Good luck in your search, as it took me a little while to arrive at an optimum build.
