Quick little tip here:

When you see the little blue flare fly straight up, it's a UAV.

If it is an enemy UAV, you typically can't target it (although on occasion I've been able to, not sure why), allied UAV's will have the little blue triangle over them!

How to hit UAV's:

Aim above the little blue flames, the jets on the UAV are not part of it, and do not take damage when shot.

A small dot will appear in the center of your cross-hair.
The range-finder is also an indicator you're on target.

Happy Hunting!

You can hit them with LRMs or even SSRMs if you can get a lock.

You'll need someone at the right range looking up (your detection is a narrow 45` cone, not your full field of view) so generally you need someone far enough back they can see it in the middle of their screen but with extended range so they can get a solid lock.

They seem to have at least 20hp but that's just an educated guess.

Never noticed the dot. I always used the range effectiveness readout on my weapons HUD. =]

But yeah, it does take some work to get your crosshair on those things - I love watching 3+ mechs worth of lasers shooting up in the sky and never hitting it. I once sniped it with a gauss round for the hell of it.

Oh, when you destroy it you'll see the animation of something exploding.

Do check around if you're being lrm'ed even when behind cover.

The small dot and the range-finder work in tandem, if one of them is showing, so does the other!

Locking missiles can find it; though it may require an active probe. Sometimes I see the red X when I'm running streaks.

that ^
if it is in range of any weapon on your mech, you can take them down. one erppc, a couple of volleys of 2 ML's etc, took one down with 6 small lasers from top of a building on frozen city

Yup. My record is three UAV kills in one game.

I DO think they need to make an achievement for that.
Too many times in pugs I've seen both sides take crazy damage from lerm rain and none ever seem to notice.

pay attention to the range, if you are on the UAV, the range changes that your crosshair idicates, but UAV's foalt so they are a bit harder to hit.

afaik, the small dot is always there when you move your crosshair but the torso is yet not exactly on the corsshair (it is actually just the line from armmovement being 1 pixel "long")

The best way to hit them is to pay attention to the crosshair's range in meters. If its infinity you're going to miss. If it displays a number it's an almost guaranteed hit.

Simplest way to hit them is to just look at your hud, the range will adjust as soon as your sights are aimed directly at it.

Shooting them in a Spider? Frustrating as hell!! The cockpit bars their location perfectly.
I finally settled on using free-look to aim my arms at them off to the side, or trying to shoot them on the move (shya'right.)
I may just give up, report their location, and run away, because stopping to draw a bead on them in the Spider drives me crazy.
