IMAGE HEAVY!

Massive thanks go to Heffay for the tutorials. Thanks also go out to all the people who have shared their knowledge and experience in the various threads who make it possible for people like me to have fun with models! I don't know much about 3D modelling but this is a fun start.

I'll be updating this topic as I learn new things and commit them to pixels.

It's basically Heffay's Blender tutorials, yes. I'm doing a Jagermech next.

Please quote posts next time if you reply to them, otherwise I miss the reply :)

Looks really good! The material is nice, is it the default one or did you play around with it?

It's somewhat default - I haven't gotten to modifying materials. I just played around with the sun lamp to make the color seem believable. And...spent a few hours, literally, adjusting roughness and alphas etc. lol
As I said I have little experience with this so getting to know my way around the mechanics of the program is nothing if not a steep learning curve.

You using cycles? There is so much you can do with it. And now you can do smoke & fire with it! Looks incredibly real.

Blendercookie has a ton of great cycles tutorials. Anything by Kent Trammel is worth watching.

Next one: Jagermech.
Made some beefier guns for it. Inspired by ACS's Unseen Rifleman art.

Learned some new things - improved lighting, improved shadows/softness, minimized noise, added backdrop/infinite plane and shadows. Result:

Attempt at putting the Timby in a 3D environment. Was a royal pain and it's still not right.

Posted Image

This is what the node structure looked like. Apparently Render Cycles is to Blender Render the way Linux Command Line is to Windows GUI - but in this case getting an object to only do shadows takes all that and 30 minutes of rendering whereas in Blender Render you tick a box. And yeah, I used a silly second plane to make the base for the shadows on the bushes lol. Also there's 2 other planes flying around the Timby that have been edited out to simulate the effect of the leaves casting shadows on the legs.

God when you pose it like that it's so evident that the mech is waaaay too wide and shows so much.
