(sorry for the threadnomancy, but, figured I could help)
I had this happen a lot on my old computer, nVidia GPU as well. I was able to really reduce these by lowering the rate on the GPU. Not sure how to describe it, because I R tech noob. There was a thread on the nVidia forums about it, I believe it was the clock rate for the GPU. I did that, was able to play the game again, which made the slightly lowered graphics worth it.
