What do you suggest for a game mechanic for Merc groups? I have thoughts about a bidding system where; when a match is created, there are slots made for a merc/merc lance to drop in and the factions/house in the match must bid on the extra help. or if the faction is trying to defend a stronghold planet and is stretched thin, a job posting can be put on MercNet and "we" can bid on the price of the contract. Make us more "proactive". And when the game gets older and there are a lot more mechs, hace the mechs house dependant and the mercs can buy anything and everyone else has to salvage whats not in their techpool. plus, mechs can use modded weapons, say a large Laser that cycles a little faster but for less dmg or more heat (yea yea, pulse lasers) or a 4 round burst ultra AC instead of 2 with a chance of jamming more. etc

is there anything in the works for Salvage? or putting nicknacks/good luck charms in the cockpit (hahaha...cockpit)? or making custom paint/custom physical touches to the outside of the mech (spikes or keep some battle damage like laser scars and bullet holes etc)

I don't think mercenaries independent from the factions will fit into the developers design-pillars for the game. Their idea is to create community investment in the world, but if people can just play as mercenaries from outside of the faction houses, they aren't operating as a part of the community except by proxy. Also, what would be the functional difference in players who find out their faction is having a turf battle, and a merc who finds out there's a turf battle? A merc might as well just join a house if they want to compete.

Also, it states in the FAQ that every pilot has to pick a starting faction when they create their pilot, so it doesn't sound like "independent" will be an option.

However, if you're really attached to the mercenaries thing, I'd recommend going to play MW4:Mercenaries in case you haven't. It's free on MekTek's website.

Nah, I like the idea, I just don't think it's going to fit in with this game according to what the developers have released. Also, I like MW4 and didn't mean to sound snarky if that's what you mean.

It's not really possible to piece together exactly how mercenary corps will work in this game. Aside from being able to take and hold planets on the periphery, we haven't been given much explanation as to how that particular aspect of the game will work. It doesn't seem like there will be a bidding mechanic, however. It seems more like the mercs just represent a different faction that you can drop into battle against with your own merc unit or with a house unit. Just another team on the field, as it were.

I disagree seeing how lopsided the size of factions are. Browncoats easily balance it out so Marik and Davions don't cry.

This is what has been said about mercs;
"
The Inner Sphere is broken up into several factions, each with their own regions and sub-regions. Each faction is warring with at least one other faction at all times in a universal territory battle. Players can be active or passive participants in this battle by following one of three paths:
  • Pledging Allegiance to a Faction
  • Joining a Mercenary Corporation
  • Remaining Neutral
  • Border Worlds – Are fought over via a contract bidding system by player run Mercenary Corporations. These planets change hands on a regular basis, and have no impact on historical events. Rewards for controlling a boarder world are significant and go directly to the occupying Merc Corp.

  • As a Mercenary Corporation, all members’ earned loyalty points go to the Merc Corp. The Merc Corp must have a minimum amount of loyalty points with a faction before they are able to engage in planetary combat on behalf of that faction. Loyalty points also determine the type and level of contract a Merc Corp is permitted to bid on. These loyalty point restrictions mean that a Merc Corp’s membership, must remain active in order to maintain the required level of LPs.
Ranks are created within a Merc Corp by the Merc Corp leader. The naming of the ranks is entirely up to the Merc Corp leader who can assign Merc Corp level permissions to each rank.

Thanks for posting that Nik... was going to myself...

Greyrook... looks to me like Mercs fit "right" in to the game... according to what the devs have released so far... ;) Just teasin' ya... but really looking forward to when they get this up and rolling...

"Battle and win... battle and die... someone is still going to pay... "

Or my all time favorite Merc quote - "No job too small, no FEE too high...."
