So i am shopping for a laptop. I want something under the $1000 but capable of running MWO.
I am not overly concerned with running MWO on highest settings. I just want to be able to play the game and a few others without demolishing my small budget. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Laptops are not for gaming, specially MWO. Trust me, I already fried once the video card of my XPS...

Better buy an Alienware notebook plus an extra notebook cooler, if you wanna play MWO on it. Other notebooks could be set on "fire" by playing MWO for hours.

Asus G70 Series laptops will run MWO rather well ( my laptop can attest to that.) without an extra notebook cooler. Do note however, they run pricey at probably 1500. but they last for a very long time compared to other laptops

There's a lot of advice by people that have never actually examined the performance of a mobile machine saying "laptops aren't for gaming" or "laptops can't play MWO." This is folly.

If you're in the 15" arena, the model right above the base Lenovo Y50 comes with an i7 4710 and a GTX 860. While you're not going to put the game on "Very High" everything at 1920x1080, the game is definitely playable on that machine. It will cost you about $1100, so near the budget but a little above the $1000 watermark you mentioned.

You can also look on Xoticpc for a laptop. There are a fair amount in the $1000 range that have an i7 4710 and GTX 850 or 860.

MWO is a CPU-intensive game, so if you can spring for an i7 4810 for a slight bump in price, do it. If not, the 4710 will be okay (not amazing, but definitely not crappy either). I myself will probably be getting one of these types of machines on Black Friday, as my current laptop is only playable with mostly low settings and a couple at medium (i5 2410 and Radeon HD 6770M). I want something a little lighter but with a little more punch, and the i7+geforce machines in the 15" section fit the bill very nicely.

Not sure why people insist on using laptops for gaming, unless you really have no space for even a mini ITX system then I understand. You can easily get a cheap laptop for basically all other work with maybe the exception of 3D modeling and encoding. You get much better performance for your dollar with a desktop, even a mini ITX system.

xWiredX has it right...so far, and I've been looking in this range, if I was pinned to sub 1k, I would go with the Y50 bundle setup(same laptop, but comes with a portable dvd writer for less than the base model for some reason). I've seen it twice on Newegg for under 1k during different promo events.

The 860m will push MWO on meduim @ 1080p just fine. You can fiddle with quality settings to your taste outside of that, but I've seen it run the game well on medium, although being such a thin model, my buddy did have it wedged up higher off his desk when gaming to give the fan some clearance to keep it cool.

I'm waiting to see how prices on the 970m units shift here now that it's out before I buy anything though.

The Sager NP8651 looks pretty interesting, they are around $1250 from resellers. It has a 4k screen option as well. Check out powernotebooks.com, they are really nice to work with and specialize in doing custom gaming builds.

Every machine bought in 2013 or later will run this game, but they all run it poorly.

I have a late 2013 era 650 dollar laptop with a 730M (not made for gaming whatsoever-type of graphics card) that gives 30 some FPS on high settings.
Then I have the most beast 2000+ dollar gaming laptop from 2012, that...runs the game about as well. It used to run it at 60 FPS back in the days of closed beta, when graphics were somehow much better than they are in 2014.
And a little modern netbook that cost 350...and runs the game poorly, but it only does 1600x900 resolution.

I've heard of even cheaper machines that will do this game no problem.

Agreed. My ASUS RoG is all I have ever used to play MWO.

I run it on a Dell Inspiron N4110 laptop :P I run it on lowest settings except textures and object detail on medium. It lags a little on Frozen City day and Mining Collective, but other that that it's fine. I just prop the back up with something so it doesn't overheat.

BTW, it was only about $400 2 years ago :D

I play MWO at 25-30FPS (on good days) average on a 4-year-old ASUS N61.
That's an i5-540M / HD5730 / 8GB DDR3.

It doesn't overheat but I do have a sort of cooling stand. It used to have an i3-350M in it and 4 gigs of memory but I changed the CPU as pointed out and I used some Arctic Silver as well some mobile Kingston HyperX memory.

There is nothing wrong with gaming on a laptop. I bought a Dell Inspiron in 2003 to use for lan parties. I was scoffed at by my fellow partiers untill they saw that it actually looked better and out preformed most of thier rigs, not to mention mine was much more portable.

It worked well for gaming untill about 2 years ago when I had to start putting newer games at thier lowest settings. As of now its to old to run anything and I can't even run Win 7. So now its a Nix media server, none the less I got a nice long life out of it and lots of great gaming.

The key to remember is that laptops are not really upgradeable. Gont go cheap, especially when it comes to graphics as you are pretty much stuck with what you buy for the life of the laptop. Even if the MFG says that they are using a PCI slot you still cant run into best buy and pick up a new card because the slot the laptop MFG is using is still a proprietary form factor.

You can skimp on ram and the hard drive as they are easily upgraded later. If you have to you can even skimp on the processor a little. Just make sure that the board is capeable of upgrading to a better proc later. You can usually do that by making sure that the board is running the latest socket type. That way even if you dont have the best proc in it at the time of purchase, you can still upgrade it in a few years and get some extra life out of the laptop.

Dont buy anything off the shelf at your local stores because they are already out dated. You're better off going to the manufacture websites and custom building them. Some people still swear by Alienware but since Dell bought them out thier XPS line and in some cases Inspiron are just as good and will cost you a lot less.

Which one do you have? I have a GT70 too, with a GTX 780M.

MWO runs on every Laptop with a Core i7, 8 GB RAM and GTX850M (or higher) really fine.
The Performance of a GTX 850M is around a desktop GTX 560 TI so you can play Full HD on med details or take 1600x900 with high details. There should be no problem.

If you don't need that much Space on your HDD take instead a SSD!

MSI gaming series are beastly and super thin. If you have alot of money to spare buy the Gigabyte Aorus. Both choices are super thin and extremely powerful. Easily competing with alienware while much thinner. Only issue with them is battery life because of their size. If that is a big problem for you get an Asus gaming series. Thicker but with superior build quality to alienware with same specs and better aesthetics.

EDIT: Anything with a Gtx 970m or higher will run MWO near maxed or maxed at 1080p.
