We know that internal elements add to the health of the inner structure of a mech.
Considering that there are talks about increasing the TTK of mechs what about adding a new mechlab element? simply a filler element.
Fillers would be made of lightweight hardened carbon fiber foam modelled around internal spaces.
The filler would take one slot and add one point of internal structure, like most other objects it would also have 10 points of health.
The weight would be different for the various classes classes (like JJs), for example:
Light: 0.125ton per filler.
Medium: 0.166ton per filler.
Heavy: 0.25ton per filler.
Assault: 0.4ton per filler.
The weight should be decided in a way that makes not convenient to trade armour for filler.
The thing makes sense even considering real engineering, usually you don't want to leave unused space inside your vehicle but protect the inner components as much as possible.
This would be a nice way to increase your mech survivability but not for free. It would not violate any fundamental TT rule but could be added as an extension.

Exactly that but with a dedicated element: lighter and with an internal HP increase. The weight would depend on the mech class. At 0.5ton filling with gauss ammo is almost never a good tradeoff especially on non-assault classes.
