New Medieval Combat game appeared on Kickstarter (scroll down for TL;DR):

I worked a bit on the Mount & Blade: Warband mod that is the spiritual predecessor of this game: cRPG. For those of you who don't know Warband or cRPG:

M&B: Warband is an epic game from Taleworlds that lets you roleplay a fighter in a fictional medieval world. There are several Kingdoms warring on a large strategic overland map, and you can join in their wars or even create your own Kingdom. Once armies meet on the map, a battle will play out in an instanced map in which you will control your character from first/third person and be able to get into the fray directly swinging your sword or shooting your bow. You can command your troops by giving orders like "Archers, advance", etc. Your character gains experience and gold, making you a more powerful fighter sporting better equipment (from peasant to knight).
The game also features an extensive multiplayer mode that pits large teams (64 vs 64 players or more) against each other. Various game modes like capture the flag or the siege of a castle provide hundreds of hours of fun. The only thing lacking is the persistent character progress from single player mode. Each match you start resets your character to basic soldier.

This was the main point the cRPG mod addresses. In this mod, your multiplayer character is persisted on a character server, and every match you play adds to your experience and monetary reserves. Over time, the mod added tons of new equipment, maps, and features the original game doesn't have (like a web-based strategic map), so much that it has formed a large and very devoted community.

So the team behind this cRPG mod for Warband has started their own game, mostly because they were bumping against limits within Warband's core. What they have now is a custom engine and a rough gameplay prototype that shows promise for the future game. They developed it with starting funds of 40k € injected by the cRPG mod community (yes, that's how devoted this community is). Now they need funds for the next phase, during which they want to move to a central office which will let them work together much more efficiently.

TL;DR:
If you think it could be fun to play a soldier on a medieval battlefield with action-oriented melee and ranged combat mixed in with RPG elements (character progress and customization with hundreds of items), check out this kickstarter. And yes, it will have donkey cavalry.
