I've not seen this suggested anywhere, so here goes.
Currently, going into map mode gives you access to some minor tools that a commander can utilize. The game engine already has the capability to switch to a free roaming cam that can cover the battlefield. Allow players with a Command Console the ability to access the teams free roaming cam on the battlefield and get visuals on everything the team has sighted? Call it an orbital cam? This way, a commander can place icons on the teams battlemap in real time instead of the very crude overhead map of the terrain we currently use. Leave that for normal play.
The current way ownership of command works is a king of the hill fest, whoever grabs it. Leroy Jenkins or anyone can assume leadership. This seems like a feature that is not being utilized to its full potential. Has much thought been put into this on the forums and I just didn't see it between all the cries and moans about LRMs and ECM?

Observer mode for MechWarriors with Command Modules or even a dedicated 13th Gamer, who exists exclusively in Observer mode (with ability to tap into a friendly Mechs POV) would be heartily welcomed features in MWO!

Or we could, literally, go mech commander in the map mode with RTS controls.
Drag a box around the lance you want to give orders to.
Right click on location or enemy.

Interesting, so players would get rewards i think for following orders and successfully executing them too? Well whoever takes that position better give workable objectives. It'd be nice to get a bonuses from following orders in addition to what we already get in C-bills. No balancing to the reward system already in place. (Probably not though )
But at least this would give some meaning to having 'Mech Power-up detected" in the voiceover.
