Just got as text from my buddy, a guy has throttling issues due to heat on his 290 series card while benchamrking his FX-9590 against a 780 ti and a direct die cooling 4770k.

AMD guy got smoked, my guess is he didn't have enough juice and ran into heat issues.
His FX chip was water cooled but not the gpu from what i'm told, I will see what else I can learn.

I thought they fixed this...??? It got hot, it got loud and it dropped clocks.

Isn't that an old issue from when they first came out..??
Haven't heard anyone having issues with that for some time.

EDIT: It's an MSI R290, will get more info in about an hour or so.

fps on laptop finally dropped below 10 with all min. settings. clearly needed a whole new computer just to keep playing MWO.
switched to this:

gigabyte ga-z97x-gaming gt
i7-4790k (at 4.0ghz w/ stock box cooler)
2x8gb corsair vengeance pro ddr3-1866
x2 sli gigabyte geforce g1 gaming gtx 970 4gb windforce
cooler master haf 932 advanced atx
win 7 home prem. sp1

now i have all settings max. and everything on, getting 60-140 fps depending on map.
all temps. under 50c and cpu usage never hits even 50%. wattage tops at about 300w-350w briefly. usually in 200s.

I hope its not the Lighting one.... It is supposed to be bad ass at keeping the card cool even while over clocked. Please let me know.

The 970 is a 224Bit 3,5GB + 32Bit 0,5GB Card bcs you can only adress 7 of 8 Memory Chips at once or the eight Memory Chip alone - the moment the 970 needs to adress the eight Chip your performance is borked.

Didnt you get the Info that Nvidia did send the reviewers wrong specs by "accident" ?

Last I heard, they blamed marketing department. I guess they tinkered with that type of technology before on 6xx value series? but it was a low end card so nobody noticed.

Looks like a brown-out, defective card or PSU issue.
No it didn't look like the MSI Lightning, but it was dual fan and red and black (not that it helps LOL) from the Pic I saw on my buddy's phone.

He was there, thinks the PSU took a Dump, said there was funny smell, but no smoke.
Sounded like a hefty burn in, but he says the guy had his card for a while.

I'm putting money on the PSU not having enough guts/AMPs or it being a 4 rail PSU instead of a single rail PSU.

Not sure what he has yet, I will get that info tomorrow when my buddy stops by his place.

The 970 performs fine, stable 60 on 2K and all on very high.

But MWO is still constantly crashing, just like it did with my old 780.

I might have to reinstall my Windows, I'll do that in a week or so.

Did you try to switch to 64 bit MWO client, if not already done? Also cleaning of cache in MWO might help. That's what I would have done before Windows reinstall.

I only play on tge 64 bit, it crashes with the 32 bit client too. I did everything I could including the repair tool.

It's not 6 months after the last installation of windows and its time to reinstall it anyways

What do you use to reinstall it? Acronis? etc? or from scratch?

Completely from scratch, as in format Volume C and install a new Windows

Isn't it extremely time consuming? Have you tried installing fresh Windows and updating drivers and installing all the long term software you want and updates to Windows and saving it completely as a backup? It only takes me 20 minutes to reinstall Windows (including every driver and software installed (and tweaked) and Windows update as of the time of backup.) I use Acronis--it's a snap to reinstall.

That's not really reinstalling though that's just re imaging.
It has its pros as a quick fix but it also has its cons.

I see re-imagining just like using the defaults when compiling Linux. It saves time, but you don't get the best performance for your individual machine.

The updates isn't really a problem imo, they'll install automatically eventually. The real work is reinstalling all the software.

I've not had to reinstall often, used the same win7 install with 3 different mobo's and cpu's, finally changed it to 8 when the harddrive died. Guess I should be grateful it even lasted that long, being a seagate.

Gotta be honest i've only ever had seagate drives and never had one fail.

So what we are actually saying with the 970 is the memory allocation has no impact on performance in 9/10 games (SoM is hard on any setup).

Which is great it's still a fantastic card.

But that doesn't excuse Nvidia with the marketing information mess.

Those of you claiming this is a CPU issue are COMPLETELY mistaken. If it was a CPU issue, when running at 1440p or above, GPU usage would increase and FPS would stay the same. NOT the case.

In fact, I have the best gaming CPU there is right now. Haswell-E 5820k @ 4.7ghz DDR4 2400 and a GTX TITAN X Overclocked to 1450mhz

There is not a better PC you can build right now to run MWO... period. The highest performing single GPU to date, and the highest performing CPU for gaming to date.

I get 10% GPU usage in this game, TEN PERCENT. My framerate drops into the 40s and barely fights to stay above 60 at times that there is no action. It's PATHETIC.

This game is FLAWED and needs to be fixed. Enthusiasts like us want to enjoy the game with the settings turned up, not running @ LOW all the time, which is what I was doing as well during testing.

I'm not going to run at 1080p on a 1440p display with a Titan X, just not happening. And all this propaganda about 4K they spewed out, I also tried 4K, and it was FAR worse. Also the SLI propaganda never came about either.

As someone who has spent over $2000 on this company, I feel betrayed.
