So after some time away, I come back to find this Invasion stuff being tested and I have this notice to join a unit. Thing is, I am not playing CW and have no desire now to join up. How do I remove an offer to join a unit?

I think you can just click on it then select reject, but I have never rejected an offer so cannot be certain.

edit:
or if you cannot reject the offer but want it gone from your notifications just accept then immediately go to the faction tab and select leave unit.

You can just reject the unit invite by clicking on it. Once you do it'll ask you to accept or reject it.

Maybe join, and send them a message that only douchebags send invitations to people who haven't asked for them. (assuming it wasn't a typo etc).

How about he stays polite instead? Why always the need to insult others?

Maybe because he can't figure out how to spell his own name?
