I can see a map, some blinking dots that represent planets where there is activity.

Then I click on a dot/planet and have to allocate 240 tons to four mechs, using trial or my own mechs. From my perspective as a solo player, this hardly makes sense. I just want to select my preferred mech and join a queue with enough tons free.

I read the pinned topics and am none the wiser as what to do in my situation. Any ideas as to how actually get into a match here?

You have to build a dropdeck consisting of exactly 4 mechs with a total weight between 160 and 240 tons to take part in CW.
To join a match you click on a contested planet (sword or shield symbol in the planet finder) and click on the Attack / Defend button. You will then join a pre-match lobby and - after waiting for a team and an enemy team - you will drop into an Invasion match.

You basically have 4 lives. So pick a mech for each life and you can choose a new mech to drop in when your current one is destroyed :-)

Think of the drop deck as your lives in a game. You get 4 lives in CW. But only soo much tonnage for those 4 lives. So you are forced to choose what roles you want to fill pre match and then use them throughout the match. Kinda the basic premise. Would explain it a bit more but hate writing on the forums from my phone.

Thanks a lot, now it makes more sense.

Did I miss something in the UI that would have made it clear?

The UI help files are non-existant. You need to read the patch notes and Command Chair posts to understand what is going on.
