Don't get me wrong, the discussion that goes on in GD is amazing to read, but I feel like I'm way behind on the curve compared to anyone else. I played MechWarrior 1-4 (nothing outside MW like MechCommander though) And I enjoyed every minute of it.

I guess I never really got into optimizing my mech as what I found fun was just jumping in with whatever I was given and going at it. I am REALLY looking forward to MWO but after reading GD I'm getting anxious about people really hammering me when I get out of the gate.

Anyone else feel this way? Or should I hit the books to catch up?

I hope that things will get explained in the game itself for the newbies, I've been reading the books for the last 13 ~ 14 years and still don't know everything.

I'd recommend the Blood of Kerensky trilogy if you are only getting into the lore now. It explains the current status quo and the next two years.

Its certainly possible to do some research. If nothing else you can play MechWarrior 4 till this one comes out. It will give you the basics of game. As far as the lore goes, there is a very rich game background that even the most die hard fan would have a hard time remembering it all. Even reading one of the Battletech books will go far in giving you the feel of the history. I really enjoyed the Grey Death Legion books, and it happens around the same time the game is being launched.

MekTek has a free version of MechWarrior 4: http://www.mektek.net/projects/mw4/

Knowledge of battletech isn't going to provide much of an advantage in the game so, I don't really worry about it. I mean, its cool to know about something you really care about, but I don't imagine knowing the lore is going to help them when I stick an AC20 up their backside and pull the trigger.

The first 3 GDL books start 30 years prior to the Clan invasion (close to the time period of MW1), but are still a good introduction to the universe.

A good crash course to the universe would be go to sarna.net and just pick a time era and read up on the major events and if it sparks your interest read some more detailed artcles or pic up some books.

Hope it helps a little

read some of the novels like the blood of Kerensky as was suggested...

also Decision at Thunder Rift will get you started with the Grey Death Legion...who by the way of the Grey Death memory core will be somewhat significant in this game if I don't miss my guess. :)

also you can go to the Battletech Wiki online and get a bit of info

I played MW since MW2, but here in Brazil we never had access to any BT products, neither games or books. I'm trying to buy the books for some years and I just do not know where to began as there is so many of them. The TT or RPG games are impossible to find here and importing them will be to much expensive due to taxes.

Would be nice to have a post around here with an introduction to the BT universe, what books are good to start reading, what is the basic TT set for a beginner. I would like to play with my kids!

Well reading about 100 books and several editions of the rulebook and tech-readouts, then add a few hundred hours of the original boardgame something is bound to stick in the head ;-)

don´t worry you can find interesting facts at sarna.net
a battletech wiki but you can play very well without any knowledge of the background.

Its not just lore knowledge though. As BduSlammer said, alot of people have been playing for 30 years. They seem infinitely more familiar with what they can kit a jenner out with than I am.

Knowledge comes with time and experience. If you want to know more you need to put your face in the books and read and then read some more. All the information is out there for the picking you need to find it.

If you'd like, private-message me with your Skype data or something similar! I'm a Battletech veteran and ultra-guru, and have brought many new folks into the welcoming arms of Blake over my (not many) years, so I've developed a bit of a science for what's important and how to make it sound interesting :)

You don't really need to know everything about the Battletech/Mechwarrior univese to enjoy it, if you want to "book up" on the history of the Great houses and the Clan wars and what happened after, you may want to check out the Battletech Wiki . .

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_Page

Take munchies. . you may be there a long time . . .
