I'm looking to go poke people in the Faction wars, but sadly half of my mech bay (if not more) are all clan mechs and therefor ineligible. So I figured I'd post something up for a few opinions on some mechs I can buy.

I don't really have any preferences. I already have the lights covered (I love my Locusts and Firestarters) so I'm looking for something more in the medium or heavy range. I'd say assault, but the amount of time it would take to get cbills for it make it kinda meh.

Any hints or ideas?

I'd say pick up Jenners, given your leanings, but if you want a Medium or Heavy that's fun to run, Cicada's a good Light-hunter. With your past experience with Lights, you'll know their tendencies and that will help.

Blackjacks are fun, but real fragile. Wolverines are good. Shadowhawks are good. Griffins are probably what you're looking for, though.

Heavy-wise, Cataphracts have fun variants that are pretty different from each other. Thunderbolts are the new meta, with two builds (MPL and the ERPPCs) that are at the top of the heap. But that also means they are in...every...single...game. If you want to be unique, try Phracts.

Catapults are fun and zippy, but similarly fragile. Some interesting builds, though.

First suggestion since you love the locust and firestarter is the cicada. You probably use energy weapons, and the speed of it is comparable.

If you want a medium that plays differently then your lights the vindicator, trebuchet, centurion, shadowhawk, kintaro, wolverine and griffin all have models that can be used as decent brawlers if you load them with three or more SRM launchers. So best to visit smurfy and see what you can do with the other varients before picking one.

For heavy mechs the jagermech and cataphract are good choices if you like ballistics. I have never tried the catapult but it seems the mech to have for missiles.

If you prefer energy weapons you will love the thunderbolts as their quirk bonuses are amazing. The dragon N also has great ballistic advantage right now. I would not count on these surviving the next few quirk adjustments.

The Thunderbolts are some of the best energy heavies in the IS right now (the 9S stands out as being one of the better ones for very long range engagements, when set up with 3 ERPPCs)

I'd use the T-bolt, because it's what I have and it got buffed a ton with quirks. I used to have a CTF 4X, but frankly the Jager made it obsolete imo. I'm loving the King Crab. If I had tons of money to burn and played IS-side, I'd probably run Locust 3M, Locust PB, King Crab 000, King Crab 0000. Or something like that. Maybe swap in my T-bolt 9S.

Funny thing is, I have the opposite problem. I'm a clan player and almost my entire stable is IS mechs, since Clan ones only recently became available for C-bills. I'm working on collecting Stormcrows, since I feel that they perform in a sort of happy medium place in CW. They're fast enough I can engage the light rush, and punchy enough that I can fight heavies to some effect.

Dragons,4 1N:s in a CW dropdeck would be devastating

Its a glass cannon in its purest form, sustained 15.8 DPS from the dual autocannons alone, can outgun direwolves, excellent force multiplier and fire support mech.
Before the quirks it was good, now its borderline OP

Don't leave out the Vindicator line, the AA is my favorite but with a STD engine, they can soak up a lot of damage - I often find I'm down to a head laser and some glowing legs.

Hunchback's torso twist is great, and who doesn't love a high-mounted AC20?

If you want to play commuity warfare you will need a minimum of 160 tonnes.

Locust - 20
Firestarter - 35

160 subtract 55 = 105
240 subtract 55 = 185

A minimum of 2 mediums are needed and you still have enough tonnage for 2 assaults if you desire.

Battlemaster is a great assault chassis
King Crab is an amazing chassis
Cataphract can be deadly

Check out the mechs in smurphy mechlab.

Too many options at this point. You have so much tonnage available.

100 tonners in CW are pretty much never worth it unless you bring a full wave of them (like: 12 people in atlases and crabs, jesus that was scary). You'll just get primaried (Biggest threat) and 1 shot by the 12 mechs now shooting you. (12 people on Boreal can literally 1 shot an Atlas before he can say "WHAT" - and that is the tankiest 100tonner there is)

I'd suggest bringing 3 heavies 1 med/Light. so you have more waves to throw at the enemy with high firepower instead of 1 Assault and at least 2 mechs that do not contribute at all :P

I use the Shadowhawk 2K and Griffin Sparky often in CW, they have good maneuverability and durability for their speed and tonnage. Definitely get the Thunderbolt 9S for glorious, cheesy ERPPC spam, or the 5SS for the mighty Thunderwub.

Personally, I run Raven 3L + Firestarter S + Sparky + Shadowhawk 2K or something to that effect. I'm better in lighter chassis and you might be in the same boat, though your team will love you if you bring something that has decent punchability like a Thunderbolt 9S.

I'm kinda specialising in IS medium mechs at the moment so I can make some recommendations...

Cicada - A medium that thinks it's a light. I run the 2B varient with 4 medium pluse lasers. It works really well as a hit and run mech as it doesn't have the armour to last in a stand up fight.

Wolverine - The 6K is just amazing with it's large pulse laser quirks. If you want to get kills then this is the medium for you. The only thing you have to worry about is the fact that all of the firepower for the mech is concentrated in the right arm. If you lose that your mech has basicaly been declawed.

Shadowhawk - I run the 2K as a Wolverine 6K lite. The 3 large pulse lasers are moved to the left shoulder which offers a bit more protection and makes it easier to 'poke and shoot'. Although it hasn't got the awesome quirks that the Wolverine does it still works really well.

Griffon - I run my 1N as a close range brawler with plenty of speed and manuverability. I'm currently running it with 3 medium pulse lasers and 3 SRM 6's. Although it runs hot it can really hurt enemy mechs at close range. As I only get a couple of shots before I start running the risk of shutting down I try to hunt down enemy mechs that are already damaged and finnish them off.

I've also mastered the Blackjack but I have struggled to have much success with it. I'm currenty working on mastering the Centurion but I haven't put enough games into it yet to decide whether Iike it or not.

Go for all variants of Wolverines - all three are good. One is a AC5 Dakka master(40-50% cooldown+JJ - mine has 230 rounds loaded...), One is a LPL master and last is a close range SRM master(+JJ). So you have three fun mechs which you want to keep - all can go to Zombie mode as well.

You can then elite them and also get XL engines for the speed

You have to remember that your right arm is the source of your power and low slung = don't lose it! (apart from the SRM build)

This isn't a popular mech for some reason (it is fugly and right arm)- I see one every 3-4 games but once you note its strengths and weaknesses then it will serve you well.

CW is all about teamwork, and you already love playing fast lights...why not add ECM to that mix? Raven-3L h Cicada-3M are both rugged "lights" with ecm and energy hardpoints.

While there are great choices here for heavies and assaults (tdr-9s, ctf-3d), I believe you'd have more fun warming up to higher weight classes and CW with these 2 ecm mechs.
