Works pretty good with the armor maxed out and its using the stock engine. I've only been using it to unlock the elite tier for my Firebrand but was surprised how good it ended up being.

Or, sacrifice a little speed for upgraded cannons.

Greatly appreciated. I will have to put some of these to the test.
Any other (productive) suggestions are welcome.

Play a few games and at the end of each, or on your death (if your keeping an eye on it) looks to see how the rear armour on your side torso's is.
If you are finding after a few rounds your rear side torso's are not taking much damage, switch 5 points from each side to the front and see how you go.
Quite a few mechs have pretty tiny rear side torso hit boxes, I am honestly not sure on the jeager but this is what I have started doing on some of my other mechs.
The jeager mech is a difficult one when deciding to go XL or not, but I tend to lean on the side of yes XL is worth it, despite its kinda exposed and squishy side torso's.

Or take out the LBX's and MG's and relace with AC10's.

Only if you have the mech elited already- without tweak it's sluggish with STD250.

Firebrand I've been doing decently with a std 260, gauss/ppc on one arm and medium lasers filling the rest of the energy points. Don't use the ppc under 300m for heat, switch to ml's. Good for direct fire support and does decently in a brawl if you get caught in one.Gauss is no heat so fire away. I know you asked about the S and DD but it's food for thought.

if the gauss isn't your cup of tea (it isn't for most people it seems) then honestly i think the firebrand is your best bet for STD. when weight is an issue i find only 1 AC is practical and the FB has energy mounts in the arms so you can stay hull down longer. this may not seem great, but when you play it for a bit and get used to it this is hands down one of my fav loadouts - 30 pinpoint on lights usually kills them, and if you use hills you can fire at people when they can't fire back. this mech is all about patience and using cover, but if you downgrade the ERPPC to an ERLL you can still snipe and maybe add a couple torso MLs

Troll -all- the way at high speed. You can do similar (or crazier) things with the DD (just look up the Dapperjager on Youtube), and it works out alarmingly well.

Beyond that it's hard to go wrong with go wrong with dual UACs on the DD or AC20 + 4 MLs on the S.

Positioning is key.
Firebrand does it better and XL allows 2 LL's.
