Marik is more like the EU in its setup or the Holy Roman Empire of old. The United States binds its member states much closer than the FWL does. The reason the FWL has so many civil wars is because its member states have ALOT of autonomy.

did steiner already exist at the beginning of Battletech?

googling tells me BT is 1984 while WH 40k is 1987. so Ultramarines are Steiner instead?

According to their Logo i´d say "Imperial Fists" ;)

Who are about as rigid as the Ultramarines in their following of the Codex Astartes.

Comparing anything to the ultrasmurfs is a bit of a stretch.

Davions are more like blood angels than ultramarines. Being ultra smurf means you never suffer hardships, setbacks, losses, and all your regular grunts are the equivalent of the most hardcore of the other factions' heroes.

Davion is neither Space Marines nor White Knights. FASA gave them the same amount of crazed leaders as the other houses and did a good job to paint the BTU grey (be it intentional or not). Stackpole and his one-dimensional character development is the one to blame here. He made the BTU black and white.

Yeah, I always thought Marik was Space Rome. The Eagle, and purple is the color of Roman royalty.

We have had this discussion. The symbols and trappings = Rome. The structure and mechanics = HRE.

Besides, I think Elementals are closer to Space marines than anything else.

I still find it funny how Steiner and Davion are competing for being the most German (my money's on Davion because JagerMech) while Theodore Kurita is basically Space Bismarck.

Yes- take your most wounded veteran and stuff him into a sensory deprivation tank. Then hook up said tank to a walking gattling gun/missile launcher. Drop him onto a planet and point him at enemy. Success!

Do I smell 40K in my MWO? Because I've always wanted to use a WHM while I Warhammer in the grim darkness of the Xty-1st centurllennium.

Steiner = Hanseatic League

Davion = British Empire

Most of Inner Sphere houses are based very loosely around the Napoleonic Era and 19th Century history. It gave them a decent frame work to world craft from. Tis why Marik is in a near constant state of Civil War, because of this starting point. They sorta meshed the 18th and 19th century's historical issues together.
