Grid Iron

Firestarter.

The Lasers....

The Wubz....

The Gauss...

Depending on which ones and, how they're set up; not seeing a problem with it.

After constant fiddling with my drop deck, and rejoicing in the 10 extra tons granted recently, I have come up with some fun combinations. However, what I realize is that what works for 1 map doesn't work as well for the others. The Thunderbolt 9s used to be the "must have" mech on your drop deck, but now I find it runs too hot for the Sulfur map. Basically you need to have some back-up mechs with ballistics if you wind up having to fight on the sulfur map. The other tip is to use standard engines on your heavy and assault mechs so you have some longevity. Most clanners are laser vomit builds and its too easy to pinpoint your side torsos.

So my base drop deck for (cold map) Borreal Vault has:
  • 95 ton Banshee 3M - 3LPs & 5MPs - 325 standard & 20 heatsinks - still runs hot :)
  • 65 ton Thunderbolt 5ss 7MPs "meta-build" 300 std
  • 65 ton Thunderbolt 9s 2ER PPCs, 4MLs, 2MGs, 275std
  • 25 ton Commando TDK - 4MPs, 200xl
If I'm going to newest canyon map Hellebore Springs or the hot map Sulfur Springs then I want ballistics (especially sulfur) and jump jets in my mix (replace 1 & 3 & 4 or 2 & 4) with:
  • Banshee 3E - 1AC10, 1UAC5, 2PPCs & 2MLs 300std -- 35 pinpoint alpha hurts and it can run cool on ballistics -- helps if you are a good shot but this build is fun
  • Shadowhawk: either 2H with UAC5 & AC5 or 2K (runs a bit hot) with 3LPs both can use 255xl or 280xl depending on load out
  • Firestarter: S w 4MLs, 3MPs & 255xl & 2AMS or E: with 4MLs & 4MGs
I would consider using a jagermech in place of a Thunderbolt for Sulfur Springs but it doesn't seem to soak up the damage as the Thunderbolt. But it is fun to shoot 3UACs at them :)

The Shadowhawk runs an XL but it usually has the best damage dispersion of the mediums I've tried. An alternative could be the Wolverine 6R with 2AC5s but I haven't mastered it and don't use it much right now. And I prefer the Shadowhawks gun placement up high.

My main point is to have 6 mechs ready with Modules when you get ready for CW, that way when you know the map you are going to and whether you are defending or attacking then you can switch your mechs in the typically 1 minute that you have to do so.

I didn't mention ECM but hopefully your teammate has some. :) If not bring Commando 2D or Raven 3L or Spider for the light mech. Sometimes I bring a Spider 5D and King Crab instead of the Banshee and Commando. Love the dakka!

Regarding Orions... for the tonnage I don't think they have the firepower (i.e. quirks) and hitboxes the thunderbolts have. Seems like the 65ton Thunderbolt survives longer and the 5ss is great for legging clan mechs.

Serious?

Because mechs are bad.

Orion: Mediocre brawler with poor hardpoint that weigh 75 ton.

Awesome: worst mech in game.

Locust: light with no jump jet that die instantly to any Streak Crow or dual gauss build.

1 TDR-5SS: x4 ER LL
1 TDR-5SS: x7 MPL
1 SHD-2K: x3 LPL
1 SHD-2K: either x3 LPL or x3 ER LL

Tonnage = 240

Note: Since I don't own a second SHD-2K I use the 2H w/ Gauss + ER PPC or the Sparky w/ x2 LPL, and x4 ML.

Orions are decent. But depending on the Awesome/Locust this drop deck could end badly. Would not suggest unless feeling hardcore as heck. Your choice though OP, and remember it's direct skill and teamwork that overtakes anything, though in higher tier matches the possibility to doing things is gonna be harder since they will likely spam stormcrows and timbers and hellbringers.

I haven't re-rigged my awesome's but to my understanding they never fixed their hitboxes - so that's your 80 ton crutch which pretty much anything would be better to run imo. They just don't have enough firepower to overcome having torsos that even a blind pilot could hit.

It's a bit disappointing that Orion's low arms make them unsuitable for mid/long-range hill peeking.

I have an elegant solution for hardpoint placement problems. It's a little unorthodox, but see if you can follow me here.
