Here's my setup;
cpu: amd 8350
mobo: asus m5a78L-M lx plus
ram: kingston 8gb
gpu: msi hd 7970
storage: kingston ssd 120gb (game and OS on this) & seagate 500gb hdd (random storage)

What's been going on;
I have ran this game (and others) very smoothly on this rig for over a year and I have been able to stream it. About a month or two ago, it still runs smoothly but out of random my frames go from ~55-60 to 5-10 fps for about 15-20 seconds. After those few seconds, it goes back to normal. This happens very frequently. About every 5 minutes or so. I have noticed that this has been happening in all of my games. I have reformatted and reinstalled w7 and still notice the same problem occuring. Is this some sort of a hardware issue? I really feel like it is my processor or something is starting to go bad.

Could be throttling due to heat?

Hows your cooling system? Maybe time for a new paste job and blow all the dust n stuff out of the chassis

Good place to satart, anyways

PS advice for that SSD, I would leave about 30% of it empty (free space) at all times. Certainly don't fill it up!!

How about posting your in-game video settings and settings that aren't default in the CCC.

Are these drops linked to text appearing in the upper left corner?

I would check out OpenHardwareMonitor. It is a free utility that can tell you if you are experiencing heat issues with your processor or any other hardware. If you are experiencing heat issues check out the thermal paste between the processor and the heat sink, it may have dried out and is no longer working well enough to prevent heat issues. It could also be a faulty heat sink fan that is not keeping the processor cool enough.

It may also be worthwhile to do a RAM error check. Here's an article that shows you how to use the built in Windows utility to do it.

First, check your processes for something called Akami Net Session. This can be safely disabled from your startup - and it has a huge impact on framerates.
Second, don't despair. I've been having the same problem. Randomly-seeming it will give me games where the frame rates are very poor. Before you go out and start dumping a water-cooling system in your box, first see if the problem is present in Testing Grounds. I'll bet it isn't. My system is very similar to what you've got, and I keep it pretty cool. It isn't my system causing the problem, but some kind of issue with the netcode. In Testing Grounds it runs at 90+ FPS, settings to Ultra High.

I've noticed with mine that changing the graphic settings has zero impact on the framerates. It could be that the West Coast pipeline is problematic, but I've noticed that sometimes the game patches and it runs beautiful, and other times it goes back to crap after a hot-fix.

I am a computer tech. I have gone through my system with a fine-toothed comb, trying everything to see if I can get more consistent performance. Hours of work, fine-tuning. Benchmarking like no other. It isn't the machine, its the game. I'll bet you still crush Skyrim just fine.

My suggestion is to run through the Testing Grounds. If it is running fine there, send a note to support. If enough of us note the exact same problem, PGI will move it up the support queue. Its just how it works. I don't know if they need to run more diagnostics on their servers or what, but something ought to be done.

And before the nVidia guys start bashing, I should note that I had the same issues on a intel-based nVidia system as well. I imagine that most of us are experiencing the problem. It doesn't bounce around so much as messes with hit reg. Majority of the time, the frame rate counter will read below 20 FPS, and the game still looks pretty smooth. I get games where it looks like I got every one of the AC/20 rounds on target, and then in the final report it shows like 39 damage.

I'm almost entirely positive this is a net-code issue, not hardware.

Have the same problems, I think its a problem with the AMD FX CPU. My gaming rig is a FX 8320@ 4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, HD280X and MWO is the only Game who perform really bad. FPS at 1080 with high details go down sometimes under 20 FPS.

In the past years the game run smooth on this system with 50-60 FPS, think one of the last patches optimised the game for intel. On my mobile rig ( Intel i5 4200, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia M750) the game run without this drops in the framerate

As a retail computer builder; I can say with experience the FX8000 and FX9000 chips require something a little stronger than the standard AMD cooler when used for gaming, a small investment in a aftermarket cooler can help a lot in general. As a standard rule drop your particle and shadow effects settings down to medium or low.
Your problem maybe more specific to software than hardware however, it may be worth timing these FPS drops then looking through your windows event log to see if any other processes are kicking in at the same time.

It's worth noting that PGI do not have any AMD workstations in their development or testing departments, so unsurprisingly this game is lacking in AMD optimisations.

Thanks for all the help guys.
I went and got some new thermal paste and applied it to the heatsink and processor. It looked like there were some areas that were in direct contact and most of it was all dried up. I'll make a post with an update! :)

Lord Letto what is this?

Lord Letto, do i need to apply all of those settings? I'd really like the experience of being a mech pilot. turning off the glass seems a bit like game breaking

Have the same problems, I think its a problem with the AMD FX CPU.

Im starting to think this. Problem still persists.
What I have done so far:
New thermal paste
turned off shadows
turned off particles
searched for "akaminet" (didnt find it)

Doubt it, with specs in my sig I could get 30-45 FPS (More on the High/Max end if I wasn't capping it in my user CFG) that I can notice in the F9 FPS Display when I look at it with Very High Settings (Except Particles & Shadows @ Medium), no AA in Game (done in CCC with everything Maxed There), no Damage Glow, V-sync or Motion Blur, 1080P DX11. the FX-83xx Series should be Tons Better than my FX-4100. u basically take that wall of text and save it in a notepad txt file on desktop called user.cfg. than move it to MWO folder (C://programfiles/piranhagames and boom >25% performance increase for most fx users.......

and nothing modified in that file is considered game breaking or an exploit.

I think a couple of people have missed a telling point in the OP, and because i respect some of you that missed it, i can't pick on the computer tech that thinks this is related to netcode. (shame on you all!)

Quote

I have noticed that this has been happening in all of my games

This isn't a MWO issue.
This is a hardware/ software (maybe windows but doubtful) issue.

This is good, can you provide us some figures now, use something like HWmonitor
http://www.cpuid.com...onitor_1.27.exe

Have this open, and when the FPS drops occur, please either screenshot and upload or post what the temperatures of your CPU are during said time.

Here is an example of mine so you know what your looking for.

There's your problem it's exceeding the maximum safe temperatures and throttling itself to reduce heat and prevent damage.

Clean the fan and CPU of current thermal paste.
Put a pea sized amount of thermal paste on the centre of the CPU and replace the cooler making sure it's tightened and in place correctly.

What cooler are you using?

I'll say again if it's the stock amd fan like the one shown and sounding in this video ,
I would suggest a replacement, you don't have to go overboard just some thing with a larger cooling area and bigger fan you don't have to go all out on a liquid cooling system or anything

I'd also recommend getting these for it also if you can afford it:
