Greetings.
While researching improvements for my King Crab a thought poped up in my head...
I can't go after Elite and Master after researching everything in the first category... it must be I have to buy the other variants to unlock further research. But then... We only have 4 slots in our Mechbay.
It would be very unreasonable that with so many mechs we'd have to fill our entire mechbay with a single chassis.
So... let's say I got all 3 KGC variants. Do they all take only one slot in the mechbay?
Are the mechbays Chassis Resticted or do variants also take up space?
it would be terrible if it's slot per variant...

It's one slot per variant. Mechbays are available for purchase. They cost about $1.50 each and are really the only thing you have to buy (though you can also get them during events or by playing CW).

Only 1.50?! Damn, I thought it will be more, overpriced like it usually is in F2P. This ain't much.
Thanks for the info :)

NP. Yeah, it's a common saw in this game that the only thing that's fairly priced is mechbays (300 MC). Enen at the $6.95 (smallest) MC package, you get 1250 MC, so you can buy four mechbays. They're not unreasonable. Colors, camos, mechs...more expensive. But bays are reasonable (and do go on sale sometimes).

Welcome to MWO and good luck!

Although I don't fully recommend, you could farm up some free mechbays in Community Warfare. You get one free mechbay when you level up to Rank 2 in any given faction, so you could acquire Rank 2 easily in multiple factions to get multiple free mechbays.

You need four mechs to play CW, so you should choose you best four that fit up to 240 tons. The reason why I don't fully recommend it, is because you'll probably need to use Trial Mechs to fill out your four mech dropdeck, and since you're a new player you could be the weakest link on your team and your teammates might get irritated with you. But if you really need the free mech bays, you could still do it, and get some experience of what Community Warfare is like. Just be prepared to lose all your matches - don't expect to do well on your own, it's a team-oriented mode, after all, and you could be facing 12-man premade teams on the enemy side.

King Crab has terrible center hull armor, I'll have to replace him in time.
I am working on a Raven, 5mil from getting the one I want. I fell in love with the Trial Raven I'm using. Best I got with it (nonpremium) is 191k credits and 3980 exp :3 So, as far as Lights are concerned I know what I'll be getting.
Any recommendations which Mediums, Heavies and Assault are competitive and can you tell me more about CW?
Oh, and... what's up with the insanely long queue times for matching?
What about factions? Any benefits to either or just cosmetical+LP and roleplaying for some?

regarding CW,
you say you have a King Crab and have decided on a Raven, that leaves you with 105 tonnes to play with, for that tonnage I would sugest getting a few Hunchbacks, they are 50 ton Medium Mechs, weighting 50 ton each. the Hunchies are eack quirked to make them a specialist with something close to their stock loadout, and do not need XL engines (the most expensive part of most Light and Medium Mechs). as I mentioned all Hunchbacks are specialists,
here is a list of Hunchbacks along with their speciality:

HBK-4G, AC20, it has quirks to make the AC20 fire faster further and cooler

HBK-4H, AC10, has quirks to make the AC10 fires like an AC5

HBK-4P, has quirks to make Medium Lasers fire further, faster and cooler, but beware of firing all 9 at once or you will incur Ghost heat penalties (additional heat for firing more than a set number of a weapon system inside half a second, in this case 6 ML)

HBK-4SP, quirks for recharge, range and fire rate on SRM6 and ML

HBK-4J, LRM10s

Grid Iron (Hero Mech costs real money) Gauss Rifle quirks

the Hunchbacks are all quirked to be effective with their stock loadout but will all benefit from the Double Heat Sink upgrade Endo Steel Internals and a Standard 250 or larger engine (they come with 200 engines which make them the same speed as most assault Mechs)

in Comunity Warefare you first have to join a faction, I suggest you do not take permanent contracts as you will have to pay to break them.
the only important decision here is Inner Sphere or Clan, as you already have the King Crab and plan to get a Raven both of which are Inner Sphere Mechs you will want Inner Sphere (as you have to use faction relevant Mechs), so the Free Rasslehague Republic or any of the Houses, if you take a contract with a Clan you will be stuck with just trial Mechs unless you own some Clan Omnimechs (any of the Mechs where you cannot change engine but can swap body parts between variants).
you could join a unit and use the units faction choice but if you are just after the free Mechbays you would be better off just taking 1 week contracts with the FRR and the 5 Houses to get all 6 level 2 IS Mechbays.

3 times a day there is a cease fire where new planets become available for attack and it is decided if any planets are due to change hands.

for a planet to change hands the attackers must hold half the "zones"
to take a zone the attacker must kill all defenders or destroy the orbital cannon, to do this the attacker has to get into the base by destroy the gate generators or jumping over the gate, then they take out the 3 "O gen" which opens up the orbital gun "Omega" for attack, taking out the generator on the back of the gun results in a win for the attackers regardless of the state of the defenders.

if the defenders try to defend on a zone which has already been taken it becomes a counter attack, in which case the team who selected attack will be defending a base with the gates open and all defenses and other objectives from the usual CW game mode disabled. to win the defenders must destroy all attackers AND the attackers Mobile field base to win

to participate in CW you must chose a planet to attack or defend then select 4 Mechs with a combined weight between 160 and 240 tonnes, if you do not select for yourself you will be assigned 4 trial Mechs.

weather you get attack/defend or counter attack is essentially random, zones are assigned sequential, so when a game forms you will be assigned a zone, then you can see if it is attack or counter attack and you could have between 1 and 5 minutes to select your Mechs

there is a CW event this weekend so expect much more people than usual to be playing CW, to get a shorter wait time look in the top right of the screen on the faction tab for planets with more enemies than friendlies which are a few short of a multiple of 12 on the friendly side

When mechbays are on half price sale, get them. i did and never regretted it. 20 is heaps for most people.

CW is a game mode called Community Warfare. Attracts all the hard core players.
If you have insanely long queue times it might be because you have community warfare mode as the search. There is a solo queue mode (with 3 game modes within) i remember where you need wait maybe 2 minutes. You should be able to find that if you were not on it already.

Good luck and have fun, or blow stuff up trying.

Oh yeah, the trial raven is based on my personal raven (trial raven has less armour and a bigger engine) so good choice on falling in love with it :)

The factions, part of community warfare, each faction holds a section of the map, Clan factions have different technology. i don't know for certain how many benefits belonging to a faction has but if you earn enough points from each faction in the community warfare thing it is suppossed to unlock extra in game money and equipment or something.

This is in USD, in case you're not aware...

Depending on whether you chose an IS house or a Clan faction, it will limit you to what type of mech you can bring in your CW drop deck. You own a KGC, so you can only play it in CW if you choose an IS house, Steiner, Laoi, Marik, Davion, Kurita, or Free Rasalhague Republic.

If you choose a Clan Faction, Jade Falcon, Wolf, Ghost Bear, or Smoke Jaguar, you can only play Clan mechs in CW.

In the regular Public queue, regardless of your faction choice, you can play whatever mech you want.

The weapons do vary between IS and Clan and you can't change out an engine, heat sink type, or armor type with Clan mechs. That's just the basic differences.

Clan mechs generally have more range, but run hotter. IS mechs generally run cooler, depending on loadout, but have greater pin point damage potential. To play an IS mech effectively, you need to use cover to close range so your weapons are within optimal range. Don't try to play Snipe Warrior when fighting clans in your IS mech.
