$140 is not a budget for a GPU/CPU/RAM. I don't need to tell you how a computer processes data. My advise is wait and save. With the new Titian coming out you will be able to get a 980 on ebay for around $350 - $400; maybe less - we will see....

Im not sure what you are smoking.

His $240 was for GPU only, people have given him GPU and PSU because his PSU is no name OEM.

Nobody that actually read the OP or subsequent posts is replacing his CPU or RAM.

Well i play MWO, Farcry 4, battlefield 4, Warframe, Payday 2, Metro 2033 - LL (redux), and borderlands presequel mostly and all do fine. Admittedly they arent all on ultra but they are all on atleast medium/high mix and all look good.

Personally i would rather have something useable quickly then have to wait to double the graphics budget. And like you pointed out other games will be played, AAA / major games will be more likely to be released with dx12 so a lower hardware spec should be required vs dx10 for the same game so i would say midrange is fine.

Also 5820 is a X99 specifically the 6 core 28 lane model from intel which he said he has 8 gigs (since x99 only works with DDR4) upgrading either would be pointless unless spending over 1000. which based on 140 for GPU is unlikely.

So to sum it up having a very similar build (5820 + 16g DDR4 + Asus x99 deluxe) with a R9 270 (which really isnt a high end card) believe me a 980 isnt neccesary or reasonable on a budget unless your going for 4k in which case you wouldnt be on a budget.

Rubbish.

For one, the 280X is not a new card, its a refresh 7000 series from last generation.
DX 12 has been in development longer than Mantle (now dead), and Direct X will be Direct X with no favoritism of brand.

the Maxwell 900 series outstripped the R9 200 series cards.

Story ends.

We don't do fan boys here, we do facts.

best post on the entire MWO forums EVER!!

Look at the spec's and make sure your GPU is DX12 ready.

Bear in mind, just having DX12 installed on your computer isn't insta-FPS. The games need to use it, too.

I'd like to thank everyone for their inputs. I think this is a good thread. I was actually reluctant to post my question because I know how passionate people can be regarding hardware configurations.

I have a self imposed budget of $240 for a GPU. (Not sure where the $140 comes from?) I was worried about "Price Creep" and its happening.

FYI, the games I play are Boarderlands 3, FarCry 3, Assassin's Creed Unity, Crysis, etc. Pretty much wait for a good deal on Steam and download. I've only recently discovered MWO.

What motivated me to get a new Rig was the fact that my FPS on MWO was dipping down to 40 fps on LOW. My goal is to have my FPS not drop below 60 for at least 1 year on High or Ultra. Then I can start bumping setting down.

My GTX 550 ti served my well for 3 years without a hiccup.

From this thread it now looks like my 600 watt PSU also need to be replace. No disrespect but is that absolutely necessary? Can I go 6 mos before swapping it out? This new PSU might have 20 hrs on it.

The consensus seems to be that the R9 280 (x) or the GTX 970 are way to go. I can afford it but am having a hard time checking out the CART. $320 is a lot of money. relatively speaking.

I'll probably get liquored up and do a drunk buy one of those cards.

Again, thank you very much for participating and keeping it relatively civil.

The psu is probably fine. Your pc won't get anywhere near 600W with a single gpu, so even if you bought a terrible brand it should survive :)

If you want to save money on your gpu you can often find pretty good deals on used ones, as gpus are the most often replaced parts in pc's.

if you ever get a stable 60fps with no dips (in mwo) below please let us all know how on earth you managed it ;) .. sounds like you are making a good decision on your gpu even if it may be a hard price to swallow!

The power supply question.

People suggested replacing it because from the information you gave it appears to be an OEM PSU which is an unknown quantity, PSU's are the lifeblood of your machine.
Alot of un-named OEM brands are very cheap using cheap capacitors and have terrible voltage regulation.

Given that a higher end card than a 550TI is going to increase your overall load on a PSU a bad one could become a ticking time bomb.
Or it could not.
That is the risk you take with OEM kit and entirely is up to you.

The 970 is the current place to be for 1080P gaming so if you can afford it then that's where i would go. If you can't as stated 960/280/280x are all good alternatives there is no real reason to go higher unless your going to game at a higher resolution and alot of people make that mistake.

IMO, my 6970 Does Fine at 1080P (Granted I don't have any New AAA Games to Play), I can get ~30 FPS Minimum (From what I can tell by Glancing @ the FPS Counter) in MWO with all on Very High (Except Particles & Shadows @ Medium), 1080P DX11, and GPU Rarely, if ever hit's 100% Use (Unless I have MSAA on in game, then solid 100% and Max 30FPS, Even in Mechlab). in War Thunder(That AFAIK is the Highest GPU Dependent Game I play) With Everything Maxed (Except AA that I do Via CCC) it's Max 80-90's FPS with VSync off in Planes, in Tanks that's More Demanding due to more Details and Stuff to Render I Get a Good 30-40FPS, But it's all Smooth & Playable to Me, Even iRacing I Can Do Maxed Out and Get Decent FPS.

The 6970 is Kinda Old Being Released on December 15th 2010, The Equivalent, More Modern Cards (Going by Toms Hardware GPU Hierarchy Chart) would be the HD 7850 (March 19th 2012 Release Date) & R7 265 (March 5th 2014 Release), On The Nvidia Side, From the GTX 5xx Series (That the HD 6000 Series Competed With), Would be the 570 (December 7th 2010 Release) & Then the 660 (Non Ti, Had a Release Date of September 13th 2012)

I too am looking to upgrade my graphics card, but unlike the OP I'm replacing mine because I have everything set as low as it will go and I generally run in the 15-18 FPS range. Right now I'm running an i5-2300 2.8 GHz with 8GB of ram on an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 mobo. GPU is a 9500 gt. With a budget of $150-$200, what will get me at the very least 30-40 FPS on medium or better?

Yes, everything's set to low. I can't recall the resolution off the top of my head (I'm not at home currently), but I have to play in windowed mode. I'm guessing it's something like 1280x768, but I could be totally off.

Google image search shows it's rated for 360W on 12V, wouldn't get anything too crazy when it comes to gpu's.

R9 260X or something should be possible
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814202081

not a very fast card, but it should easily do the 30-40 fps on medium you're looking for.

Pulled the trigger for at GTX 970 from newegg. I'll have to eat canned cat food for a while but at least I'll have decent FPS.

I know someone will come on here and lay a big steamy t*rd on my decision but we can't make everyone happy.

For the PSU guys, the local TigerDirect brick and mortar store is closing and I'm sure I can pick up a 1000w PSU relatively cheap. I'll check the cushions in my couch and car ash tray for extra change.

Keep the psu, if it's "sli/crossfire ready" it can easily power a single 970.
