Hi guys,

I am looking for 2 new mechs I can master. I figured that you can give me a more accurate answer than I will ever be able to come up with :P

1.) A Heavy, IS only, no PPC, should be able to do almost anything: brawling, LRM.. (I already own the Thunderbolt)

2.) A Medium, IS only, a specialised role for heavy flanking maneuvers - no sniping (I already own the Shadowhawk)

It would be cool if you guys could give me some recommendations. I would also prefer mechs that aren't very hard to play or require some weird tactics to make them work.

Dragons have become popular recently and can fulfill your requirements. I've only used the 5N and it was alright but I can easily imagine it singing if I elited it.

I would recommend Centurions. They're durable mechs and can pack a punch. The AH and YLW variants can pack AC20s and can go a decent clip so they make good flankers.

Yeah Centurion is a good medium as is the Hunchback.
As for heavies try the Jager or Quickdraw.

Might also consider the Quickdraw for the heavy.

Thanks guys, I already have the Centurion AH(L) so this will be my next medium. I am still torn between the heavy suggestions (:

can't go wrong with the cent - it's just plain fun

Jagger is my fav heavy - arm mounts are higher than the cockpit so you can stay in cover while delivering a beating, and you can throw on a wide variety of loadouts:

Jag-A can be a solid LRM boat or SRM boat

i don't waste real cash on hero mechs, but the Firebrand (as well as the Yen Lo Wang) is worth wasting cash on since you get ballistic AND energy slots mounted on the arms. the 280XL it comes with is useful too, especially on lighter mechs

Jag-S is good for ballistic boating - i know the DD has 6 mounts, but you'r not going to be putting more than 4 ACs on it ever, MGs on the DD are a waste of amazing high arm mounts, and the DD is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than the rest of the Jags. get the only DD if you don't want to spring for the Firebrand, but like i said the FB is worth it

Centurion is solid.

Jagermechs have always been good but if LRMs are important to you, I'd recommend the Quickdraw. It might just be me, but I'm not a fan of the LRM Jagermech (-A).

Heavy - Orion. Hard to play, but when you learn how to play it, you love it.
Medium - Griffin. Best of the best :) Srm killing machine :)

I learned today that CN9-D can load up a 390-rated engine and run ~130 kph.

Orion. Jack of all trades, master of brawling (hue). VA can be a ridiculous missile boat, V can dakka with dual ballistics, K for the hardest hitting brawler short of an Atlas, M for mixed weaponry. The Protector can be made into every role you can think of and still do well. Orions are also one of the tankiest 'Mechs in this game. Their only weakness is their sluggishness because don't take XL engines well.

No other IS heavy in this bracket is as flexible as the Orion now. They're all more specialized. Unfortunately I'd say they're hard to play with. Hitboxes need some getting used to and their inherent sluggishness means you need very good positioning skills.

Griffin and the Centurion. The Griffin hits extremely hard due to its SRM-heavy loadout and it spreads damage naturally well without much effort. Centurion are also fast and survivable enough to do "heavy flanking" (whatever that means).

not the optimal mech for LRMs, but still did the job admirably when i first started LRMing. the single ML for defense was a good lesson in positioning, as you can see from my death avg

Flanking medium,

Griffin can move and brawl with the SRMs.

Cicada is basically a Locust that ate too much. Its hard to play but can flank well due to outright speed and ridge hump/corner peek ability. Try not to brawl in a Cicada.

Thanks guys for even more helpful answers.

The Orion looks really good and is just what I was looking for gameplaywise. But it would also be my heaviest mech, I might just play the Jaegermech instead since it weighs 10 tons less and will have similar speed to my other mechs. The Orion looks like it barely didn't make it to be classified as an assault for me and I don't think I am up to the challenge to play the teams main damage dealer yet.

Edit: I haven't seen Jaegermechs brawl tho can he do that?

The Jagermech is an extremely fragile 'Mech. Taking it to a brawl is a very bad idea. It's a strictly ballistic support 'Mech. Yes, you can do an 2xAC20 (so-called AC40) build and maybe surprise a few opponents, but you'll be focused down immediately and those side torsos are very easy to pop.

dirty open brawling maybe not so much, but if you use cover properly (ramps and hills are your best friend) you can dish it out without exposing yourself much. MWO is all about knowing the maps so it'l take some practice to utilize and position the Jag properly, but having to be slightly more methodical in the Jag will rub off on your general game and you'l be better for it

that being said, i brawl in my Firebrand and don't do great in it kill/death-wise, but i have way more fun in it than i do most other mechs because of those arms

Dont be scared of the Orion. It is very versatile. Just remember a couple things:

If you XL engine an Orion, you best put a damn big XL in. If you don't do an XL for speed, you are doing it wrong on that one.

The missile Orions can LRM. They can also make devestating SRM mechs(I prefer SRM strongly)

Orion's aren't really sniper mechs. The weapons are a bit to low, and the mech a little too sluggish to play peekaboo. you can mount some longer range stuff on and play back row fire support with LRM if that's your thing, but usually the ORion does best when moving with the herd, even LRM Orion.

I do not recommend a quickdraw, not as a second heavy. Maybe 3rd or 4th. The variants are radically different in loadouts and performance IMO, and you need a solid grasp of how heavy play in pretty much every role in order to wreck it in one. I would actually suggest running an assault first- the positioning awareness practice will come in handy for something like the QKD.

Jagers are fun, not really brawler worthy in tanky-ness, but in firepower they certainly can be. You can do missiles with tthe A, and there is numerous other fun loadouts for them. If you are looking for L33t ski11z stats, Jagers might be to eh for you. If you want to have fun, Jagers are versatile and amusing as all get out to run.

Catapult is a solid chassis also, but more missile oriented unless you pony up for a Jester to go with the K2. Like a Jager, the CT hitbox makes it sort of lackluster for brawling. All other playstyle fit this mech well though, and they are EZPZ to pilot so long as you remember the Ct is an AC20/alpha magnet and don't stare down an enemy.

Dragons can;t missile all that well. Play like a more powerful medium otherwise, and would actually fill your "flanking medium" role as well or better than the centurian. If you want well rounded, might want to hold off on this mech.

Phracts recently got a hitbox review that makes them feel updated to todays standards better, and are a lot of fun to play. Tanky if you frontload armor and know how to twist(and keep people off your back) and potent direct fire loadouts. Not much missile though, one variant can SRM ok as support weapons.

overall? I would stick to the Orion if you really want a well rounded Heavy. Lots of loadouts on these forums to look at, otherwise start a thread and get flooded with them. Dont be chicken about running something bigger like that either, some n00b Atlas pilot will do worse than you I am sure haha :P

I'll go against the grain.

I had a blast playing my Kintaro's.

You can load up LRMs, or SRMs easily. You can tickle them with 3 or 4 medium lasers, and you have rather good speed, over or near 100kph to play the hit and run game. It has no Ballistic options, so if that is a bother, don't go that route.

I have one Kintaro, an 18, that has an XL300 engine, unmastered 89kph, mastered 98 kph, that has an 75 point alpha... think on that for a minute...

I can run in drop 150 points and run off. This would be called a scavenger mech. There are many, many Heavys and Assaults that can't alpha that high, let alone run away at 90-100 kph. And it has ammo longevity with 6 or 8 tons of SRM ammo depending on how many heat sinks you want to run, either 10 or 12. I have had some 800-1000 point rounds in this build.

Onto the the Heavy side, I will never love another Heavy like I love the Jager. They really can do it all. One is a LRM platform, on can boat 3 or 4 LL, one can boat 2 or 3 UAC5's or 4 Ac5's. And that's for the non-MC versions. The MC version is one of my favorite all time mechs. My Firebrand carries (1) Ac20, (1) Ac10, 5 ML... watch out. A little slow with an XL225, but can hit like a mack truck with good FLPPD, and scare off fast movers with steady Medium laser spray.

There are many, many good choices. The fun part is finding what you like. I used to hate my Dragons. Now they are just about my most lethal Robot. Gotta figure it out on your own based on your play style.

You sound like you're looking for variety in your Heavies, and I have to weigh in in favor of the Orion on this one. As with a previous poster- if you're going to XL engine an ONI, go fast or go home. That said, with standard engines they make excellent brawlers, and really the only thing they can't be kitted out for is sniping. While the variants aren't as different from one another as on some other 'mechs, each one covers all three types of weapon to some degree, allowing you a lot of options.

Failing Orions, a good 'variety' option is the Cataphract- while only one has missile hardpoints to speak of (the 2X), one of them jumps, they all have various laser/ballistic hardpoints, and as long as you stay clear of the 4X you can stay mobile and have weapons mounted both low and high (the 4X is very speed restricted and has only low hardpoints not counting its missileface).

Do NOT go to the Quickdraw for a 'variety' Heavy. The hitboxes and size of that 'mech are specialized with high speed in mind, and while there are a number of things you can do with it at high speed, the G and H Quickdraws are suited primarily to skirmishing and harassing, and the K tends to serve well as a skirmisher, brawler, or hill-humper itself, leaving you with little variety. QKDs make poor missile support, the only one with ballistics is the Hero, and their size cripples them if they aren't moving pretty dang quick.

As far as mediums suited for flanking maneuvers, I'd recommend the Wolverine. Decently quick, variants with noticably different hardpoints, and very easy to pack a punch on makes it a useful flanker with more options than the Griffin and more toughness than most other Mediums. Also, Kintaro can't jump ever. Jumping tends to be important to flankers, as without it your approach angles get restricted. This also makes the Trebuchet an okay flanker choice, come to think of it, though it's a bit easier to take down than a WVR.
