Thanks Mate
I like balsa because it gives me a grainy finish, ive got off the shelf plastic kits and the surfaces are perfectly smooth.
Whereas, painted and sanded balsa gives me a pitted cast iron/ceramic type result. The slight imperfections add to the weathered look i'm after.

I do use some plastic as the pic below shows, it has its place when i want a uniform result like the missile tubes etc

Simple cockpit assemblys, nothing fancy just a chair, but its worth the effort when the job is done

This is a hybrid of the MW4 chassis and CBT design, CBT cannons starting to form up (they get shortened later)

Upper arms started, i wanted the MadCat style elbow, because it gives scope for cables etc, The CBT design doesnt allow for this and it always struck me as unrealistic
Im often asked what do you use to make these, the upper arms are a classic example of the anything that works answer
Drinking straw with the bendy part, styrene strip from the hobby shop, pipe cleaner for internal (gives me the ability to flex the joint) and flyscreen for the cross hatch detail

First of the four to be completed to the "blank" stage

Posted Image

First "blank" with a coat of silver primer, this will be sanded and the detailing stage is next. i'll use stock styrene and Xray film to add "plates" and layers of detail, then they get the final coat of silver undercoat. Once thats done it gets spattered with a super saline solution thats allowed to dry leaving salt crystals all over the mech.
The final cammo skins then get added and when dry the salt gets scratched off exposing silver flecks, simulating flaking and damage

That is pretty awesome. I love the idea with the saline solution for simulating some degree of damage to the surface of the Mech.

Thanks People, still a way to go on these

In regards to the saline solution for weathering
If you click on the image below, it will give you a larger view.
It shows off the effect rather nicely

Very, very nice. You must have some amazing games with these. Can't wait to see them all finished up and painted. I'm half way through making a paper Vulture, but I'm tempted to try wood now :)

The devil, is in the detail. I have to admit i hate this part of the build, lots of repetition, small elements, absolute accuracy both in the cut and position of the elements, i spent 5 mins positioning 2 elements yesterday turned to get the glue to lock them in position, bumped my elbow...... much wailing and gnashing of teeth entailed Posted Image

just scratching the surface in these pics, the black stuff is Xray film, of which i have copious piles of the stuff, but its thin, and works really well. the white is stock styrene from the hobby shop
so detail below the missle ports, and on top of the shoulders, the toes get the treatment with styrene as do the front of the gun mounts

Still many days of detailing to go

What is it that you've stuck on the sides there for the panelling?

Old Xray film, i had a few Xrays done in my mis-spent youth, and have envelopes with the Xrays sitting around.
Its superthin, loves superglue, gives a really flat finish. It contrasts well with the balsa. The balsa gives me a cast iron (ceramet ?) look, and the film gives me a polished steel plate effect. It sharpens the overall look of the finished model really well and........ It doesnt cost me anything unlike sheet styrene from the hobby shop ;)
