OK I have a newish laptop that is dead. newish meaning I believe it was bought a couple years ago.
It is a eMachine so not really powerful. I believe the problem is the HD, I am not entirely sure.
Since it originally had Win7, could I get a new HD and install a older OS, like Win98?

I want to get this laptop working so I can play MW2 and MW3 again. (I can kinda play MW3 now with bouncing APC's but stuck on a campaign mission that I cant seem to complete)

If not Win98 perhaps a open source OS like Ubuntu, would that work or would I need to do more tweaking to get the old games working properly?

I am really itching to play MW2Mercs again. trying to scratch that itch with MekTek's MW4 but it just aint the same.

I know its been about 20 years since my MS DOS class but,...
I have already tried DOSBox for MW2 Mercs
No Dice no matter what I try.
I've ran into this problem before when I tried it with my old XP machine many many moons ago and what I can gather/remember, there was several versions of the CD that was pressed (different versions released overseas, different versions packaged with video cards, etc.). my copy just happened to be one of the most problematic of the versions. So to play MW2 Mercs I basically need a old PC with Win98 and or DOS installed. (My copy can be played in DOS or Windows)

However, I was able to get MW2 to run on XP, but not MW2 GBL. Now with Win7 i'm SOL.

Use the program named MechVM and if you have the DOS version of the games go and get imgburn

LINKS: mechvm imgburn<--- make an CUE/BIN file of the DOS versions

IMPORTENT! Do not edit the files names if you do so the files wont work as they have there own names scripted into the files

when youve installed the game via MechVM find the CUE file that imgburn made cause it will prompt you to find the burned cd file to work

You could try to re-install Win7 (if the key on it is still readable) and run a virtual machine via something like VirtualBox and see if that may work. You could get the best of both worlds for that set up. I do not know if you had the pro (or greater) version of Windows 7, but it had XP Mode that is worth a shot. Like other said though, driver will most like prohibit the option. Could always try XP if you have it, seems a happy medium with older stuff.

no OS disk, pre-install on my laptop.
winXP was on my old desktop that I built real early 2000-ish that died a horrible flaming death. Then I got my brothers emachine (also win7) until it died (I believe the problem is the HD but not 100% sure). When that died I needed a PC FAST and saw a good deal on this ACER laptop so I bought it.

I've thought about building a gaming desktop rig, but lately, 90% of my gaming time is on my PS3

I talked with my sister, she doesn't know if her teenage kids still have it or not but its still a option for me. if thats a bust I guess I could scour craigslist and evilBay for a old used win98 machine.
