Hello everyone, So there was a poll done back in 2012 which pertained to quad mechs the outcome was 81% of voters for quad mechs and roughly 19% against, Since then its been quiet with no news, Now pgi did make a statement saying it would be a nightmare to program But they didnt say Impossiable, I think that we should revisit this topic ?, I personally think that thier inclussion would add depth and new stradegy to the game and would just be awesome to pilot, Imagine some of the quirks 360° torso rotation ?, Dual ams ? Plus lower profile on some, Think we should hold another vote ?.

Let's see if they can balance bipedal mechs first.

Not as awful* as clan mechs.

As a long time fan and supporter of Quadrupedal mechs (especially the Scorpion), i approve of this thread.

Quads have no waist and no turrets.

There goes your torso twist, and therefore your whole control scheme.

So no. There will never be quads in MWO.

I would not say never, but quads will demand a different control set up and more complex animations. They are more technically difficult to produce and implement.

Well, Nova isn't supposed to have a waist either.
Also, some Quads do have "waists" like the Tarantula

Yup, this is why we'll never see them.
It'd be too much work for PGI

PGI has said no to quads because of the game engine and programing challenges of doing them. They are not going to happen.

Well, according to the TT rules quads can't torso twist, and turret rotation is limited to combat vehicles:

(Total Warfare, p.98)

With no option to torso twist and no turrets, there's little hope for the regular MWO control scheme.

Edit: At least that was the reason given by the devs way back when, IIRC. Either way, there are other issues such as the amount of work needed to create new models, animations, etc.

Torso twist is possible by contracting legs and extending others. (for spider mechs)
and torso twist is possible for cat-like mechs by scrunching one side of their torso and side stepping with their front legs. This also gives them a tight turning radius. Just like how skidders pivot in the middle.

This is why MechWarrior 2 is slightly better infact I bet people can still mod MechWarrior 2 if they so wanted too they choose not too though then again I was too young for the modding community of it back then there were IP to IP connections but now theres a way around it through programs. Also guess what? MW2 had the Tarantula hinting why I said slightly better maybe even more.

Short answer : no.

Of the TWO quad mechs available in time line, neither has 3 variants.
So even ignoring the technical aspects, they're out till 3058-3063 anyway.

Then once you include the technical side, it's as much if not more work than it took to implement the clans, for 2 mechs.

When not on my phone, I can put up the long version if folk want.

Bet if we asked Cevat Yerli if the programming of Quads in the Crysis engine was impossiable he would say no, And i have to agree with moonunitbeta that with some quad mechs the torso twist could be supplanted by leg movement and articulation, Lets not forget the PGI mindset of redesign they could if they chose to reimagine the quad mech design and art to allow quad mechs to have the same control scheme as bipedal.

I think what we need here is some "Innovation" here are some words of wisdom from mr Shapiro
INNOVATION PHILOSOPHY
Most innovation efforts fail because they are based on outdated approaches built on faulty beliefs. Efficient and repeatable innovation requires unconventional thinking. It must challenge the “more ideas is a good idea” philosophy. It must question the validity of “thinking outside the box.” It must move beyond ad hoc innovation to a sustainable capability. We have deep expertise in helping organizations like yours create a pervasive and repeatable culture of innovation.

Our work is based on moving your organization through three levels of innovation.

Level 1: Innovation as an Event: This is where most companies find themselves. They conduct brainstorming sessions or hold random contests to generate new ideas. If a good idea is produced, there is some value added to the organization. However, results are episodic and temporary rather than sustainable and pervasive.

Level 2: Innovation as a Capability: This is the next level of sophistication. The organization puts in place structures and processes to define problems, generate and evaluate solutions, and develop action plans to implement those solutions. The result is a realistic deliverable based on an organizational challenge or opportunity.

Level 3: Innovation as a System: The ultimate level involves creating an environment where innovation is embedded in everything you do. At both the event- and capability-driven levels, innovation tends to be reactionary and discrete. It is somewhat separate from the business. With embedded innovation, people not only innovate to deal with “problems or challenges” that are presented to them, but with everything they do. They continuously, even radically, improve their products, processes, and organization. This creates exponential and ongoing value.

Not as awful as clan mechs?

What?

You did not just say that the worst aesthetical concept in the entire BT universe is good looking, and that the best looking mechs in the game look worse.

Did you seriously just say that?

Grats, you're that guy. With awful, awful, the worst taste I've ever encountered in this community. Yikes/grats.

... right - and under introductory rules, Quads do Torso Twist and under advanced rules they can mount turrets. Now PGI remodeled some of the mechs to give them actual torsos and the UrbanMech supports 360 rotation, so supposing they really wanted to, then they could create the turreted quad mechs with the requisite P variants if necessary.

Likely? Hell no! But nothing is impossible :)
