Now is a time of good fortune for our beloved FRR. But twas' not so long ago that things were very, very different. A time when we were all but extinct save for a handful of loyalist and a few mercs who suffered from being burdened with more Honor than sense. A bad time true...but a time of Heroes. When looking now at those action reports, I see my name listed beside many who are destined to be remembered as our Republics greatest heroes and I feel honored to have been call shieldbrother by such as they. For them, for those like myself, who answered the call to fill our ranks, and for all others who, in the time of our greatest need. stood against all odds to aid us, I would share a thing with you. From decades ago, in a place called the Known World, from one who, while he lived, was my best friend...

THE SONG OF THE BORDERMEN by Ragnar Ulfgarsson

Rugged and rough at the kingdom's edge
Far from the high king's court.
The land is hard and the life is harsh
And oftentimes is short.
The outpost there at the kingdom's edge
Is first to taste the steel,
But the Bordermen will bear the brunt
And die before they yield.

So our laughter is longer and louder than most
And the mead we drink faster than ever it's poured
for the men of the Border have found that the dancing
Is sweetest when danced on the edge of the sword.

Our leather we dye with foemen's blood
Our swords know naught of rust.
We ward the gates to the southern lands
And ever hold that trust.
If ever you see a warrior stride
With eyes so fierce and bold.
You'll know he's done a turn on the wall
In an outpost broderhold.

So our laughter is longer and louder than most
And the mead we drink faster than ever it's poured
For the men of the Border have found that the dancing
Is sweetest when danced on the edge of the sword.

We take our pleasure as we can
By this be not dismayed,
For the fire that sheds the brightest light
Must sooner die and fade.
So sleep ye safe in your silks and furs
And in your great halls dine.
For we keep the wolf beyond the wall
Who keep the border line.

And our laughter is longer and louder than most
And the mead we drink faster than ever its poured.
For the men of the Border have found that the dancing
Is sweetest when danced on the edge of the sword.

The above is copyrighted to the authors widow...feel free to perform or pass it along as you will, just not for any profit. (Oh and a little hint...its much better spoken than sung.)
