What would be better when considering performance under actual battle conditions? 2 MLs can deliver more damage at more heat but longer burn, and a MPL delivers its damage within a shorter duration and less heat for that lower total damage.

What do? Clan and IS.

If you have the hardpoints and heat for it, take 2 ML. More is more.

Between 1 MPL and 2 ML the better option is probably the pair of regular mediums.

I would take 2 ML over 1 MPL almost every time.

In general two medium lasers are better.

The main benefit with the medium pulse laser is the 0.6 duration, which makes it exceptional at focusing damage. If you're planning on using sneaky, hit and run attacks, you may perform better with pulse lasers, especially on mechs that have complimentary quirks. The most notable examples are the FS9-S, CDA -2B, and TDR-5SS.

well with out knowing the mech it is hard to say, because heat and hardpoints can be an issue. are they both in the arm for instance? or spread? or in CT for zombie ext..

can you put in 2 MPL's with other tweaks? You will get higher alpha with 2 ML's, but alpha is not the only thing, DPS is a huge part of many mechs and their builds.

More heat, more damage, but how hot you already are is a big factor..

It really depends on the rest of your weapon loadout. 2 medium lasers do more damage than the pulse but also generate more heat. So for a mech which can take the extra heat the medium lasers are easily the best. If you're already pushing the limit of what heat your mech can bleed off then it might be better to just go for the single pulse. It's less damage but at least you won't be overheating as much.

I agree with alot that has been said.

2 tons for secondary loadout is probably best spent with mediums, because you can have higher useable range and double the possible damage with the ability to chain fire for the same heat. For clan mechs you can add meds to large pulses lasers and circumvent ghost heat, crit slot and weight restrictions while laying down great damage in the optimal 350-650 range with the same burn time.

Medium pulse lasers are more devastating as a main weapons group on a mech/pilot combo that can hunt around their minimum range with good heat.

Try both. It never hurts to experience the strengths and weakness "in the flesh".

I know it's not an option on your list, but on anything going over 80, take 2 SPL. The SPL is a DPS powerhouse, and on most mechs it's not too hard to circumvent its range limitations.
