Are there any gameplay elements involved in this choice?
As a Merc are you payed based off who you work for, and do certain House's pay more?
Does your choice only affect decal/paint job options?
I've read we're fighting for planets, what does that mean exactly? If a certain House wins on a map X amount of times do they get control of said map? If so, do we get any benefits? I.e. resources, manufacturing plants, etc etc.

I'm hyped as all hell for this game, but I feel they're holding back more info then needed. Game releases for founders in a month and I feel like we know too little.
Yes yes, patience, but i can only be patient for so many years

Don't worry about it yet. They mentioned that it won't be in the game 'til like 3 months after open beta. :)

I'm a bit curious on the interaction between mercs and houses. I seem to understand how the faction stuff works, and I seem to udnerstand how the merc stuff works. Just not sure about how a faction hires a merc to attack another faction or whatever.

This all goes under "community warfare" and it isn't finished.

Personally I'd prefer it if each 'mech' was pledged to a faction or merc corp, rather than the player himself (or herself). It would be a bit disspointing if I couldn't drop with a friend because I chose Steiner which applies across all my mechs whilst he chose Kurita which applies across his.

Still at this stage it's mostly conjecture I guess until we see how it actually pans out.

True but then you could have the situation occur where someone can't use such and such a mech because it can't be used while fighting under Marik because it is pledged to House Davion. But yeah, at this point no reason to worry too much about it until we start seeing more actual developer talk on the subject.

Well I guess in the 'all in' situation, someone pledged to House Davion wouldn't really be able to fight for Marik under any circumstances. Some choice is better than none in my opinion (for what it's worth ;))

Founders gain access to the Closed Beta Phase 2 which means the game still won't be complete.

As mentioned above, the Community Warfare pillar is *not* going to make it into the game at launch - or at least not at open beta. It will be added afterward, and while the Devs have but forward the general ideas they have we don't have much in the way of details yet.

I put a lot of my personal ideas for how this could work together into a thread in the Suggestions section, though, and the discussion there may be of some interest to you:

http://mwomercs.com/...warfare-pillar/

Keep in mind that those are purely my own thoughts, and while they are based on what the Devs have told us so far they may well take things in a very different direction.
