The game is great im loving it, the fluff is expansive almost as much as warhammer 40k. but back to the point the combat is so fast pace its seem im dead before i know where i screwed the pooch. so if there are any players who mind taking target dummy under there wing i would be much appreciated.

thank you

Welcome Otto! Feel free to add me in game as well, and ask any questions in new player help.
We have plenty of helpful folks that will be happy to answer questions and give advice.

See you on the battlefield!

Fewer than 2000 battles in and just feeling I'm getting the idea now! Not sure how much help I can offer but feel free to give me a shout out in game.

Best thing you have done is start chatting in here.

Use in game comms as much as possible - type or talk - and don't be afraid to ask for help; on the whole MWO has a pretty good player base, much better than most other online games (there are of course some toxic people but they are the minority in my experience) and I have found them to be largely helpful.

Good luck MechWarrior!

Add me, and I'll be able to help.

Also, if you can PM me your on times, I would be able to get on voice comms with you, and give you some more accurate, direct help.

Now here are a few things you should do:

1- NEVER spend a single cent of your earnings for your first 25 matches. You are earning a massive stipend as a new player for your first 25. It's called the "Cadet Bonus" (You'll know when you're done with them when you receive the "Knight Errant" title).

2- Use these forums extensively. Whenever you have a question, come here, and ask, most of us have been around these forums for a very, very long time, and can help you with virtually any problem you have.

3- mwo.smurfy-net.de This website has a mechlab, with the data drawn from the game's own files (PGI loves the thing). It can help you theorycraft builds, and experiment without spending any C-Bills. It will save you millions.

4- http://mwomercs.com/...-mech-building/ This is a guide for new players, that can help you with understanding mech construction, and customization in this game.

As a fellow 40K nutt I liked to personally welcome you here. The Inner Sphere could really use the light of the Emperor XD.

I would also be happy to help if we are online at the same time (UK evenings and weekends 3-4 times a week)

here are a few pointers to get you started

try to stay with the group and fire what everyone else is firing at, however avoid being the first around a corner, the first target is likely to take a lot of damage

twist your torso to spread damage, and avoid standing still when under fire, that should improve your survivability

target the enemy with the R button, that gives you information on the enemy, like what weapons it has and how much damage it has taken, as well as showing the rest of the team where it is, and allowing LRM users to lock it to give you fire support when they cannot see the Mech

use comms, ether voice (hold down [Caps Lock] to talk), or text chat, if I remember correctly defaults are [t] for everyone, [y] for your team and [u] for your lance (group of 4 Mechs).
if you use voice comms it is best to use a word when referring to a letter, e.g. C could potentially depending on accent and distortion be mistaken for B, D, E, G, P or T, where as if you say Charley for example that removes the guesswork and risk of misunderstanding.

if you ask for help be as specific as possible, e.g. "I need help" does not tell your team much, however "I need help with Atlas Echo in the corner of Charley 3 and Delta 4" tells your team exactly where you are (the corner of C3 and D4) and exactly what you need help with (an Atlas with an E above it when targeted) , they are more likely to be able to help with that information.

Welcome from another noob. I'm only a couple weeks in myself. Listen to what these guys are telling you, it's good stuff. Also, you'll encounter a couple idiots on voice comms who do nothing but berate their teammates when they don't do everything perfectly from the get-go. Ignore these louts, they bring nothing to the experience.

Welcome Otto,

Please feel free to add me as a friend in game. I play odd times and my ability to get on voice comms is limited, but I am happy to drop with you if you catch me or talk you through any questions you have. (Just don't expect me to be as good as Iraqiwalker or Rogue Jedi ;) )

It was early AM hours when you were on, but I'll try to be on late night if you could use an escort. I could use the reason to pick up the game again (I'm hitting my third year in it, development may have skyrocketed since December but it was slow before while the Publisher was sucking all the life out of the company. Sometimes you gotta take a break to be able to return and enjoy the experience).

Teamwork always makes the game that much more fun.

Also welcome to MWO.
And do you have a favorite mech yet from those you've likely tried?

Actually, if they are berating people, and being just obnoxious, it's probably a safe bet they're not doing things perfectly, and it's best to stick with what the rest of the group is doing.

Positioning is key. Remember that find how you like to position yourself then build your weapons around that.
  • Two main mech families Omni (Clan) and Battle (Inner Sphere)
  • Battlemechs allow the customization of more equipment but have fixed hardpoints, and they may have more hardpoints than the stock build will let on.
  • Omni have hard points as advertised have fixed equipment (engines, jump jets, heatsinks etc) however you can switch hardpoints by changing your omnipods.
Clans have better lasers than Inner Sphere (not accounting for quirks) lighter short range missiles, a lighter gauss rifle and mgs and have worse autocannon and long range missiles. Also they have streak 4 and 6 systems, Inner Sphere does not we only have the streak 2 :(.

However the IS weapons have less range , lasers do less damage but the IS autocannons and LRMs, at the moment, have the direct punch clan ac's and missiles lack.

See the LRMs for clan fire in a stream and the IS missiles fire in packs. The Clan ac's fire in bursts of 2 (ac 2) 3 (ac 5) 4 (ac 10) and 5 (ac 20). Where IS ac's regardless of types fire one slug. Gauss rifles fire Solid slugs regardless of faction. As for the lasers well they have less range and do less damage, but generate less heat.
Hope I helped!

Hi Otto, the first skill to learn is how to stay alive. When the two teams eventually find each other the first mech seen by the enemy team will attract fire from everyone who can get a shot off, this will make short work of any mech even if its an assault. To begin with, stay away from the front and stay in the middle of your team. When the fighting starts, your team mates will likely break cover, start firing and then retreat to cover when either their weapons get hot or fire is returned. This is your chance, you break cover when someone else is taking fire and then you start firing, then you retreat when fire is returned or your weapons get hot. Hopefully your team mate has by now returned to the front line to take the heat from you. This "technique" will help you stay alive and do damage, the more damage you get the more cbill reward and GXP/XP reward you get which will make your mechs more effective and dangerous as skills are unlocked and expensive weaponry purchased. This will speed your progression in the early stages.
Here is a game play tip - when you are starting LRM's are dangerous. You will be targeted by missiles, when this happens you first reaction must be to break Line Of Sight with the enemy, they will lose the lock and the missiles stop. Know where there is tall cover like buildings, ridges, walls etc. Get behind cover and the missiles are harmless, if you are still being hit, look for the direction they are coming, re-position your mech to be behind cover and break the line of sight.
Good luck and happy hunting.

@GenghisJr
This is awesome advice. I have been a founder since beta, but only really played my first match today (outside beta). I got demolished in my Jenner in about 60s into the match by a diashi. Being a new player, I was following the other light mech in my lance, cuz I figured he must know what to do. The other two guys who were supposed to be in our lance were not ready, but eventually either they or two others joined the match at some point after I died. Well he died first, and I died about 3s later.lol. I guess we were the first mechs to be seen, so got all the firepower on us.

In my next match I will try your advice! :)

Another thing to pay attention to, is if the mech you're following has a (C) over it. Generally speaking, it's gonna be a trial mech, which means the guy might not know what he's doing.
