how do i make a clan and what are the purpose of a clan?

So, since four of the Factions are Clans, we call these things you are talking about 'units'.

Their purpose is to show other players online to make grouping with them easier, and to benefit from unit based event. Technically you can group drop with a buncha people you know, without being in a unit, and I have seen twelve man drops in CW with more'n four different unit tags.

Also, they allow one player to pay out the contract cancellation fees for everyone, allowing newer players to go faction hopping offa someone else's Cbills. Good for helping a friend get thier rank two mechbays outta faction rewards.

All you gotta do is go into the faction tab and create a unit if I recall. I do know that in the friends section (little button in the bottom right that looks like three silhouettes, could be flashing blue.) you can offer unit membership to others.
