Great movie, went way over budget. The Gothic designs are impressive. Nothing like the novel, but still entertaining and impressive.

See, I'm on the opposite end - I haven't yet seen more than a few pieces of the movie, but I've read the book.

I strongly recommend both - however, be aware that others who have read the subsequent novels have all advised me that they fall off sharply in quality after Dune.

I liked it ...it just caught grief because HIV was the Biggest problem at the time a lot of people felt there was some subliminal plot overtones with the Baron

Am I one of the only ones who liked the 1984 version of Dune? I thought it was absolutely amazing, complicated, and imaginative (although I don't know how it compares to the novel which I haven't read but will be obtaining soon). Thoughts on the movie?

You're not alone. It still had awful moments, but I like it.

The 1984 David Lynch version is the best adaptation imo.

I think the sonic boom, jesus box, weirding modules improved on the lasgun versus shields equal nuclear explosion mechanics of the original Frank Herbert novelizations.

The only thing the David Lynch version failed to mention is Paul Atreides mother being a Harkonnen, and the Atreides vs Harkonnen blood feud being ironic in terms of Paul being half Harkonnen and half Atreides and related by blood to the Baron who just happens to be his mortal enemy.
